So in our '36 4 door, we have a sick flatty and we're trying to get it roadworthy for a wedding next weekend. Seems like it is only running on 7 cylinders and on that dead cylinder, the exhaust valve acts like its stuck, but it would run fine considering. But now it keeps backfiring if it starts and blowing out the dipstick tube.

Did it jump timing or something? Any suggestions??

do you have a hole in the piston?
maybe there is gas getting into the oil pan and igniting causing the dipstick to blow out- I had a breather do that and bounced off the hood and shot clear across the shop- but the car was flooded really really bad...

    just a thought...
    sorry man that ****s.

do a leak down on the cyl in question- but make sure you dont screw one in too far if its long because you can break the valve off... ask me how I know... haha.

I think you are right, unfortunately. The breather cap was hot and smoke was coming out the tube. Damn, we were so close too. Guess my cousin will have to take my coupe instead.

    whew... easy fix...
just hone it out and drop in a used piston-

I dont see any deep grooves up high you might be able to roll without haing to rebuild the whole thing...

That's nasty. Nobody heard it happen? Just pull the rod and lifters out on that cylinder and keep drivin'.

Don't think the lack of a rod will affect oil pressure, do you?

If the walls are good, you could try slipping another slug in it. Pull the other head off, though, and check for schrapnel that may have ****ed through the intake to other cylinders. It'll probably need a full overhaul later, but you could get it running quickly if you want. All that **** had to go somewhere!

the only place that stuff couldve gone is the oil pan...

The only thing I would pull is the pan, clean it out, and I'd put a new piston in there- the rods good- leave the same rod bearing etc-

If you need one I might have one Chad- lemme know-

    You're lucky.

I wish I had pics... I cracked a piston in my caddy convert...
I had a girl with on a date, on the way back from the movies when it let go... and I decided to push it to see how far I could get. Kinda Dumb.

Well... I could've drove it home- probably... we decided instead to drive it to her grandparents house... - the rod and pin made this deep gouge in the cyl wall to the point where it needed to be sleeved. If I would've shut her down right away I bet I could've put a new piston in it and have been back on the road... before it started to sound like a hammer rapping around in a pipe... dammit.

    Engines rule...

Takes a while to get the sump off etc. Ford never designed it well. Take off radiator hoses and stay rods, starter, headers, lift up motor to clear crossmember to allow you to lower sump. Get a slick back greaser hair do. slap in another slug ,if you are licky your bearings will be ok. What were the pistons in your motor? Me unless I had plenty of time I would leave it and use your coupe and take my time later after the wedding and fix it properly, so wont need to worry about one dodgey slug in the future.

55 dude... haha yeah but thats another story... :p

I take back that earlier crit on parts getting to the otherside...

-apparently it can happen, just got off the phone with another flathead fanatic that found a broken piece of valve guide from one side of the engine in a Cly on the other side of the engine. hmmm...

I would think you would break a valve off pushing something around in there but "maybe" not... so prob wouldn't be a bad idea since you have to buy head gasket(s) anyways...

The piston I have is out of a early block- should be the same. I'm sending the rod and all- I think it still has the rings on it.

    Good luck :)

update: My Dad and cousin took the '37 flathead out of my ch***is for my cabriolet, threw it into the 4 door and it fired right up, so they are good for the wedding again. :D
