Anyone here an expert on these transmissions? My son recently blew up the one in his little Sonoma pickup behind a 4.3 V6. Shortly after that, a buddy found a complete 90 Chevrolet 1500 with a 4.3 and 5LM60 for $400. My buddy needed the engine and I figured that would make a cheap transmission. Anyway, seems the tailshaft and housing are different between the two and I’m not finding much info out on the interwebs on these as far as questions about whether maybe shafts and tailshaft housings can be swapped. Now that I have the transmission out and I am trying to figure this out, I think I will try to fix my Harley today since I am tired of not having something to ride…
interesting, they don't show that transmission in 92, but they do in 94. Wonder what's up with that? but anyways...from rockauto, with some photochopping: looks like they use the same gears, so maybe he could swap guts? The mainshaft would be different, so if that's bad on the sonoma, he'll have to find one somewhere, but the rest of it should be the same? I think this is how you learn all about transmissions, by taking them apart and seeing what happens. At least, that's what I did when I was younger.
Thanks Jim. I kinda figure the same as far as taking things apart and learning. Will report back once we know more.
S10 NV3500 and full size NV3500 are different where the shift tower is. Also in 1990 the 5spd is a 5LM60 Getrag and is basically a bag of bolts. Need an S truck transmission
now I know more than I ever wanted to about them... https://core-shifters.com/pages/new-venture-gear-id gives a little introduction. Something about how many shift rails there are?
Sounds like I have a 90 regular cab short bed and transmission for sale since it seems nothing may interchange… Thanks for all the info.
Also, looks like my ***le to this thread should have been 5LM60 since that is what I believe both of these transmissions to be after more research. Edited the ***le to reflect that.
