I just picked up a 5spd trans. It's supposed to have come out of a Monza. It doesn't look anything like a T5, but it is a Warner trans. Anyone have any info? I'll post a picture later. Gene.
Just did a search because I haven't thought of a Monza in decades. Looks like the trans is a Borg-Warner T-50 manual transmission. Also looks to be the first American car with a 5 speed. I can't remember the last time I saw one of those, the car not the trans.
Okay for light duty engines, like 4 and V6. The only V8 G.M. ever put it behind was and Oldsmobile 260.
they were an improvement on the vega. for some reason, as i recall, the california version only came with a 350 sbc. i rode in one once and they definitely weren't made for anyone over 6 feet tall!
I saw one last Wednesday, it was on a trailer going the other way on freeway between tucson and phoenix. Would be neat to see a picture of the transmission, to remind us what it looks like.
I ran one in my 28 coupe, I broke the tail shaft off while dumping the clutch. It was a great driver before that.
Haven't seen one in years; they used to be everywhere! Way back in high school a friend of mine had a Monza coupe with the 262 and five speed. The 262 wasn't very healthy (rod knock if I remember correctly), so it got swapped for a 400 SBC. That was a lot of fun, but the rest of the drivetrain didn't last long!
was that 4-cylinder the old "iron duke"? should have put them in vegas from the get-go. and i just remembered, the V-8 was the 262, but it wouldn't pass california emissions, so they got the 350.
A T50 is an orphan. I have a broken one. The gear shift pattern is a bit funky. Reverse is where 1st would be, 1st is 2nd, and so on. Last time I checked there are no replacement parts available for it, besides the clutch. Bearings are uncaged, took mine apart to find out the crunchy crunchy, busted gears everywhere and rollers beyond count. If you have a nice operating one, change fluid dont beat on it at all or sell it to some poor bastard in need of a T50. It has good gear ratios, but can only handle 200lbft. There is also the Toyota T50, afaik they are not related.
It was a Pontiac engine, think it was produced in the mid '70s on. Not sure when they stopped. Back in the day Chevy also built a little banger going back to the early 60s. It was an option in early Novas. All the guys dad worked with, later on me too, called the little chevy and Iron Duke and they were an option with OMC outdrives and Mercruiser who later on built their own 140 hp version. If I remember right the Pontiac had a crossflow head, the chevy was just a smaller version of the 194/230 head. The Mercruiser had a true 8 port head, chevy's were siamesed ports, as well as a bigger crank. Mercruiser also built another 4 banger, the 470 and I believe it utilized a 460 Ford head. I've never rigged a boat with one of them though. Seem to remember that 470 being popular with some sand car guys back in the day.
