I searched '6 cylinder' on her and found zero !! must be doing it wrong...anyway, I am going, to pick up a 54 Victoria on Monday. I have another 53, with a stock 6 in it... I had a thought of putting the six in with a 5 speed trans. anyone done this.? my trans is Camaro. also some speed equipment and accessories... hard to find.? worth the trouble.? if not, maybe good ol 350 Chevy..
In '54 Ford when changed suspensions they also made some major power train changes the flathead V8 was replaced by the OHV 239 Y-Block and the 215 6cyl was replaced by the 223 6 cyl when this took place the frame from the firewall forward is much different and the mounts were like night and day different. You will find little aftermarket for the 215 it was only produced in 1952-53 and 223 parts do not always interchange. When Ford introduced the 302/5.0 Fox body cars with the dual sump oil pan you would almost think they thought ahead as it clears the '52-53 crossmembers perfectly '54 and later require a front sump pan like early Mustang & Bronco's.Now since these later Fox body cars came with T-5's if you could get a 302/5.0 with a T-5 bellhousing and clutch you could use the T-5 you have but there is a difference in shifter locations you may want to look into.
Jeff is correct . I do like to see a nice 6 cyl under the hoods of hotrods as much as V8's . There were a lot of good speed parts for the straight 6 cyl. back then and still can get some good speed parts today for the 6 cyl. It will be a lot of fun driving a hopped up 6 cyl. with a T5 behind it ! You can also get a 4.10 rear to put under your Ford that will really wake it up on the street . That will not be too much either due to the overdrive trans you will have . One question I do have about the trans is the T5 you have from a Ford or Chev ? The T5 was made for both companies . Jim
thanks Jeff....is there anything about these Fords, that, YOU DON"T KNOW ?? lol.Jim mine is a Camaro 5 spd...maybe the best thing is a 302/5spd, all out of one car..??
Doesn't really matter but will safe you the time of looking around for all the other parts . Donor cars are great for projects ! Just remember if you want an EFI set up you will need everything including the wiring harness , computer and so on if you want to use fuel injection . Most get a donor and take the fuel injection off and just replace with a dual plane intake and a 600 Holley or Edelbrock . If you are going this route , look for the H.O. engines ! They have a forged bottom end ! Jim
thanks Jim, only like carburators ... how do I know it is a ..ho.. motor.? I am a Chevy, engine guy, know nothing about Fords...Lloyd
The H.O. 5.0's were in Mustangs and Crown Victoria police cars 1985 and later this link will help:http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/5-0l-talk/32923-difference-between-5-0-5-0-ho.html when you are combing the salvage yards the easiest way is H.O. is stamped in the injector body see picture: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=5.0+...7&tbnw=204&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0 since you are putting this in a '54 put the word "sticky" in the search box in the upper right and the parts you need for the swap will be there.
Here's a link to Mummerts T-5 adapter plate for the 6 cyl. This is yet another thing on my 'to-do' list. http://www.ford-y-block.com/truckt5.htm
is a 300 6 out of an f150 too long? that would give you the 5 spd transmission as well as parts availabilty on a sunday afternoon in timbuktu.
I believe they are dwaynerz. I think I read something on fordsix.com about that very subject when I was exploring that ave. They're not impossible to put in just a P.I.T.A.
Just remember any engine will fit but it also depends on your skill level in the mechanics , welding , how well you do with fabrications and how much patients you have . I think the 300 straight 6 cyl will fit but it's a big one ! Have you considered a V6 engine ? You can still use a carb and the 5 speed , have plenty of power and won't be too bad on gas . Just another option . Jim
Hey guys, Rockin Rebels car is a Canadian model I presume, and as such, would still have the flathead engine. Can't remember if the Canadian 54s had the old suspension, or, balljoints.
the 4 dr. I have is a Canadian with a flathead,, but I am buying a 54 Vicky, on Monday, and it is a US model with the ball joints, ect...a Ford 300 is a good choice.. I will have to find one and measure it... retro Jim, old and talented here.....so mounting is no problem. just wonder about firewall to radiator....will check that out. thanks guys
You may not be entirely happy with that 300cu. in. 6 cyl. that's a long engine and isn't that great on gas milage. You may even spend the same amount of money trying to install a 300 as you would a 302. A 302 will get better gas mileage and there is a ton of performance parts available for it. Just my .02 worth. Something to think about.
There are radiator clearance problems with 302's running the later long pump, the 300 will only be worse with it's length. As for the idea Jim mentioned using a V6 that would not be all bad,I had a '91 T-Bird 3.8 V6/AOD that would get 26-27 MPG highway with the A/C running and pretty good power find a Donor 3.8 from a T-Bird SuperCoupe and you will really have a handful, the bucket seats in those 'Birds are also super comfy.
Now if you were closer you could have this setup: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/pts/2569508559.html
