some friends of mine in sweeden put togather a 6 hour rally race on a closed dirt turn track with several teams. what ever team makes the most laps in that 6 hours wins.(just pride) I would like to try to organize something like thishere is so cal between car clubs. i would think that each club would have to find a decent running jalopy we get them togather and draw the cars from a hat so there would be no ringers. then we race!!! each team is responsible for keeping there car running and driving for as long a possible with whatever means possible. seems like alot of fun to me!!! tell me what you think!!

If you said we'd dress up like The Warriors, I would have moved to Cali... [IMG]

I think it sounds like it would be a great venue for building and testing your build. I'm also a little confused that nobody else is chiming in.

  7. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Refueling would be the area to figure out. Maybe the cars should be shut off for fueling/driver change. I can't imagine how many gas cans would be in the infield for several cars for six hours of running. Hmmm... it could be a lot of fun. Good luck with the project. It sounds like a blast.

It sounds like a blast, except for... you guessed it, the drawing of cars. I'm not the most trusting(anymore)so if I built the car I would have to choose who gets to drive it. Just have some set rules and then have a tech sesion before the race. I'd do it!

see... the point is jalopy...we need to find basicly **** cars(most likly toyota, mazda ,etc small cars) mabye 2-300 dollers. no mods except mabye a 3 point cage as a club you wouldnt want to bring a piece of **** because you might draw that car and you dont want to make it better than the rest in case one of the other clubs drew it and spanked you!! just a blind draw. if the cars make it 6 hours i would be surprised. The sweedish guys were telling me stories of punching a hole in a roof just to tie the ****** up because they broke the mount. i think it could be a blast

I'm in So. Cal, and I think it would be a good idea. I don't think Willow Springs is using the dirt track for anything much lately either, so you could rent that fairly cheap.

    Let's see, rules...

How 'bout they have to be registered and driven to the track, so as to keep the real pieces fo **** from even showing up. American, V-8, Rear Drive. Chain the doors. Fire Extinguisher onboard in reach of the driver. I say no cage, just like the Demo Derby guys, just a bar behind the driver seat.

Willow is a small track so it ought to keep the speed down. I imagine a field of run down old Taxi Cabs and such, going out with one last hurrah.

sounds good keep the ideas flowing!!!i think a turn track rather than an oval would be better but an oval would be better spectater friendly. mabye we could get ecology to sponser and give us four or five cars!!

Ah, you mean a Road Course, not a turn track. I doubt you would find a road course willing to rent you the track if they knew a bunch of jalopies were gonna be belching vital fluids and dragging parts.

Dirt Oval tracks are much more forgiving of that sort of thing.

You had my attension till you said mazda, toyota. when I think Jalopy those two are the last thing that comes to mind!
I think about the FORMER SO WHAT CAR'S dirt tracking and I go nuts. I have a ten acre pasture that was just mowed. I would love to have a bunch of HAMB rods tear the **** out of it. if I could figure how not to be sued when some drunk flips his car or runs over some slow moving old man (ME) [IMG]

well you need cars that are some what reliable and expendable at the same time, i would hate to see some good tin go to waste. i figured the more rice burners we destroy the better. rubbin' is racin' son. deffinately ****py cars are needed. its all about club enginuity when it comes to keeping a car running for six hours of abuse and slamming!!!

I agree with FORDOLE 100%. The FIRST thing I pictured was 10 SoWhat styled hot rods ripping it up on a dirt track, however, that's 10 really nice hot rods (or even if they aren't nice) that will need some degree of repair when the race is over.
If I entered an old T racer in this race and someone (MY team member or someone from a different team) beat the **** out of it, now I (and my team) would have to fix what other people did to it.
However...If you start with a 1983 Honda and someone destroys it, who cares?

why don't we all get old Volvos? didn't they make that one boxy one from 196? till 199? the 144, or 242, or something? Tough, safe, rear drive, and plentifull.

The Recycler turns up 44 Volvos within 50 miles of L.A. under $1000, most of them 240's or 740's. I be perfectly willing to try and destroy one of these.

Some friends and I were talking about doing this when I lived in Arkansas...

The mountains just north of Ozark are full of dirt/gravel roads that lend themselves to this, some even having treacherous drop-offs along the way, a lot of low-water crossings. With many many miles of roads that are up there, virtually unused except during hutning seasons, there is an endless variety of courses possible. There are enough of them that intersect with others so you can eventually find your way back to where you started from...

What we were going to do, was to have vehicles that are street legal, different cl***es of them would run different times (trucks, FWD cars, RWD cars 4WD cars & trucks, and of course 4, 6, and 8 or more cylinder cl***es), minimal safety provisions like roll cages, harnesses, stuff like that, and helmets of course, before one was allowed to race, they would sign a waiver that made any of us involved in it legally NOT libel for anything that happened...the race would consist of driving the mountain course for several laps, those not finished by a certain time were eliminated from compe***ion, the rest would meet at a designated spot in the river bottoms south of Altus, where another course would be set up in the soybean fields...mostly 45 degree right angle curves, some sinkholes to look out for...

another option was just to do it at night, in the spirit of old time illegal street racing, but, not on the street, on dirt roads away from civilization where no innocent bystanders or kids would be hurt, just us idiots driving and navigating...and of course the unfortunate deer, bear, possum, armadillo, etc etc etc that got in the way...a plus here would be the next day's dinner would be provided...

the organization of it all seems like it would take the fun out of it though....

I rambled on way to much just to say this, What is a rally without some mountain courses???

sounds like fun...wish I was out there for this one for sure...

The " Lotta-Fun-NO-$$$-racing" have been going on over here for atleast 20 years .There used to be a limit to how much $$$ you could put into a car , so they had this rule sayin`that Any participaitin` car could be bought for equal to $600 after the races that day !! In the begining , most guys turned up with **** they otherwise would have sendt to the wrecker , but as this kind of racin` cought on , Things got more serious ( In a Nice way ) . Smashed-up VW`s on trailers was a common sight a few years back .They looked like **** [IMG], but the engines was tuned to the MAX!! . You guys should do this [IMG] It`s kinda`like the old Jalopy-racing , but the guy with the fastest $600-Car winns ( Unless some-one with a cheaper car is a better driver , OR could make his car perform for less $$$... )

i think that thats why we need to round up some cars 3-400 dollers each and each team draws a car so that there would be no ringers. maybe we could draw the cars the day before so the teams had one day to work on them and make them look funny or something. there is alot of dessert up here and i think we could set up a track really easy. just have a blast killing non american steel!!!! Its all about fun and making new friends and enginuity.

you can be on my team, I have no team either. But we'd have to find somewhere to race first.
