were all the pre 1949 GM car wheels 15" 6 lug pattern? Weren't all the GM trucks 16" 6 lug on the 1/2 tons?
pre-49 passenger car wheels were 6 lug, 16". same pattern as later chevy trucks, early Toyota 4WD and Datsun trucks.
My 50 3/4 ton chevy has original split rim 15 wheels, 16 and 17 were also available from the factory as I recall.
6 lug? Not saying they didnt make them at all because I havent done the research but all I remember Is 16.5 8 lugs on the older 3/4 tons. I would like to here more tho if its true,so I will know the next time.
In the 50's and early 60's it was real popular to swap 15 inch pickup wheels to the 48 and earlier cars so that you could run 15 inch tires and hubcaps. I remember being amused more than a little when one of the "older high school guys" at the school I was going to as a freshman wasn't able to put his just bought set of flipper hubcaps on his 46,7 or 8 Chevy coupe that he had bought a few days before because it had 16 inch wheels and he had 15 inch hubcaps. He did show up a few days later running the hubcaps and a new set of 15 inch whitewalls after going to the local wrecking yard and getting a set of wheels.
Chevy cars and Chevy and GMC pickups of the '30s and '40s were the only US made GM vehicles with the 6 lug pattern. Pontiac, Olds, Buick & Cadillac all were 5 x 5" wheel bolt pattern during that period and beyond for several years.
The 55-59 truck has 15" with the riveted on clips. This isn't the best pic but this what mine look like Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Me too, if you want the 15" with those clips, that's the stock truck wheel. They aren't 16s....15" Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Saxman, how about the first series 1955 ... did they change over to 15 or continue the AD as a 16? I have a pair of 16s with clips ... someday I will get the energy to peddle them.
i have one set 15 inch with clips and one 16 inch with clips seems like you could order with both same cover on both and pontiac poverty caps fit allso
I should have been more specific- yes my 3/4 ton is 8 lug but my point was gm offered optional sizes on their pickups- on the 1/2 ton both 15 and 16 inch wheels were offered. The same was offered on 3/4 tons- on face 16.5 are not listed on the info I have. There was a change in the gvw based on the wheel/tire size and the number of ply's. My truck has 6.70/15 8 ply tires, not sure if this was the original size on the truck.
I have 2 of the 15" w/riveted clips in almost new condition.they have been on a shelf in my old shop for 55yrs.I can post a pic tomorrow.
So they could be the optional 15" truck wheels? All the truck wheels i have ever seen are 16" on the 1/2 ton trucks.
With the three clips like that, I'm pretty sure those are 55-59 truck wheels. I wouldn't swear to it but I think the earlier wheels had 5 clips.
I can check that out tomorrow. I have a 56 c-10 frame and front suspension (I'm going to subframe the 28 with it) with wheels still on it.Of course there is no way to know if it has the original wheels, but I'll check.
guess the one i have are of the 3 clip variety i just checked so looks like they are mid 50's chevy truck?
55Dude, the wheels you posted the pic of are stock (for sure) 55-59 chev truck. They may have been used on other things but I have the 5 original wheels on my truck, plus many others laying around. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
