Oh it will be done.... I stand by that.... but not by April.... Im planning for June 1st... that should give me a couple weeks to shake it down.... Yeah they grow fast.... seems Darby was born yesterday.... She's 10 and Paul is 5 and half...LOL
Very cool project! I have the same Essex grille, except mine is horizontally louvered. Plan on using it on my '29 keep us all posted, I'm riveted to the screen here Ya need a hand too, let us know. Been feeling better lately with the cancer and*****
Awesome build, great shots too! Gonna be a killer lil daily for sure! You and the kids gonna squeeze in there, the wifey in the box! -Shiny
I built mine as a daily driver 5 years ago, and you're right--Original Ford roadster pickups were too short for real humans to set in. The cab section on mine is 6" longer than stock, and with a tilt steering column and Mustang bucket seats it is very comfortable.---And I weigh 260 pounds. I built the bed 18" shorter than stock, however I'm still running a 103 1/2" (stock model A) wheelbase and a stock length hood.---Brian
Not to rain on your parade but.... The rear suspension with the posie spring looks slick but has a flaw...Stick with me on this...if you draw it out it will make sense.. I had the same set up on a little roadster and had to modify it... As the suspension flexes the pinion angle will change.. Your top link(the spring) will get longer as it flattens out. As it gets longer it rotates you pinion changing your drive line angle... At rest no biggie. Going down the highway and hitting a big bump could cause a problem.. I had to add a third link up top and use a pretty flat 1/4 E spring...Just trying to help out..wouldn't want something to happen with the car or?? after paint or finish etc... Jason.
I agree with Jason's (above) observation. I, too, tried your set up and wasn't happy with it. I'd add a top link or two and put shackles in the springs, much better engineering.
Thanks for the heads up on the spring set-up guys. Dont be mad at me if I give it a try for myself though....OK? You can even say "I told ya so", if I change it.....LOL
Man, I don't have kids, don't want kids and even got the snip-snip to ensure against it... but damn, THAT is a great pic!!! Good luck on your project and please keep us posted. Great lookin work so far!
it cant be a real daily driver if its not driven in the snow.lol nice build man. its never fun with dealines though.
Hey Shawn, Finally got on here. Ill say it again even though I've told in person 100 times int he shop but the truck looks great.
The kids are great..... I beat them regularly to keep them in line... LOL SNOW?!?!? Whats that? Its gonna be 80 degrees tomorrow, feb 3rd... How bout if I drive it when its 115 degrees out? Hey Weston.... Thanks Tikidiablo.... make it a cold Mountain Dew and Ill be there..LOL
lookin good. i just updated my current project as well. take a look if you get a chance. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=321117 lauren
I finished welding up the rear suspension and got it tacked to the frame.... ... ... ... While I was installing the the pedals I figured out the cab was to short so.... Im stretching the cab 6 inches.... I want to keep the bed as long as posible so Im also going to stretch the wheelbase 3 inches.... Then I only have to shorten the bed 3 inches.... ... First I measured back 3 inches and remarked the centerline of the axle on the frame.... then I measured back 1.5 inches (half the dia. of the axle) and marked that on the frame. I welded some angle iron to the frame at the marks, then I put the axle against the angle iron set the pinion angle and welded the axle in place.... Now I dont have to worry about it moving while I attach the suspension.... ... ... ... ... Then I tacked a piece of tubing across the frame... The suspension was tacked to that tube so I can build the mounting points for the suspension.... ... ...
I knew from the start that the Model A wishbones were to short for my liking.... so some extentions were in order This is what I did.... First I Got some 7/8th heavywall chrome moly tubing cut to 12 inch lengths and tapped for early Ford tie rod ends.... I cut out the bottom of the wishbones 4 inches and set the extentions in flush with the bottom.... then I made some uprights for make the extentions flow a little better I think it gave them a little more strength as well.... ... ... ... ... ... I did make some small plates and weld them over the holes in the ends where the extentions come out of the wishbones.... just forgot to take pics... I have also gotten a world class T5 for the truck... ... ... ... Now I have to cut out the trans crossmember and build a new one for it....
With the extentions done I installed them, set the castor and finished the install... ... ... ... ... Then I rolled it outside for some pics..... I set the bed in place... Im using the skins from the rear doors of the Oakland that the cowl and front doors came from.... to make the quarter panels... So anyway I clamped them on for these pics..... ... ... ... ... ...
I'll try and update with more regularity.... thanks for the input.... Mike and Matt, stop by the shop and check it out
I was going to come by the yesterday but I did not have a whole lot of time and I do not know where your shop is exactly.
Hey Matt.... The shop is kinda hidden..... The address is 675 W. Helen st. 85705.... If you google it its not to hard to find.... Its at the opposite end of the building from Helen St.
...[/quote] This may seem very minor but when you look at the side profile of the truck and your wishbone extensions. I think it might look a little better to have put that gusset on the bottom. I've been watching this build for a while now. I had thought up a very similar quarter elliptical rear end set up for my project am watching to see how yours comes along. Unfortunately I think some of these guys are right that the spring is going to want to let the rear end roll back. Great looking truck tho, coming along good. I want to know how that rear end turns out definitely.
