You'll need to change to 12 volt bulbs for sure. The 6 volt bulbs will work ok for about 5 sec. Still running my 6 volt wiper motor on 12 volts.
Aside from the obvious stuff like battery, reversed cables (if it was pos ground) and lightbulbs... you need a runtz voltage reducer on each of the gauges and a ceramic resistor on the blower motor. Also need your 12v charging source, so an alternator, or modified generator.
I am doing the same conversion and found a wide range of answers, but I know you need a 12v coil as well. I haven't seen mention though about voltage regulator, fuel sending unit or headlight relay needing to be changed. Any body know about those?
Click on this it pretty much covers everything http://reviews.ebay.com/6-to-12-Volt-Conversion-1955-Ford?ugid=10000000001571127
Thanks for all the replies guys. My car is a 49 mercury 4dr sedan. The 12volt conversion seems pretty easy compared to the steering modifications i'm into now. I will have to start a new thread for that one.
