Get a wiring kit. 12 circuit or so, should be fine. Most people pitch the wipers and heater, and modernize that stuff. See if there's a simple 12 volt motor to replace the wiper motor and heater fan. If not, modernize.

Major operation. Lots of work. Plan it out, and buy all the stuff first. Get a soldering gun, some heat-shrink tubing of various sizes, and some rosin-core solder.

Do a search on some threads that give tech advice on how to splice two wires.

It's not rocket science, but millions of people have screwed it up. Do not use telephone wire, zip cord, or anything having to do with house wiring.

It will cost you money, so make sure you have that first.

"I have no problem with someone using a 6volt system and a good 6 volt harness will perform as good as any 12volt system if it is good functioning order."

this is true. as a matter of fact, the 6v systems had to push twice the amprage of a 12v system to do the same job. that being the case, the 6v wires are thicker gauge and will carry the 12v's (and half the amps) with no problem.

Keep the 6 volt starter. It won't die, and you'll know when the engine starts 'cause it slows down when it catches!
    My '50 Plymouth never burnt out a starter. Used a generator from a '54 (12 v)

Will 6 volt power window and power seat motors fry when opperated on 12 volt?

I am going to try this question once again because I KNOW that SOMEBODY out there knows the answer to this question firsthand.

What model and type of 12 volt battery will fit in a 1940 Ford standard battery tray?

    Thanks in advance,

Well, to answer my own question (since no one else did :D ) as it is "right now"....
I hooked up the 12 V battery yesterday, the seats and windows work really fast, :D
I don't know if they will last or not but I will cross that bridge when I come to it.
Surprisingly, The window and seat switches still work "right" even with the polarity change, up is still up and down is still down...
Must be something to do with the relay set up, but I don't feel like thinking it through now, I will just be happy in the fact that they work, for the time being anyway.... :D

hey, like the 6v starter with 12v power. the motors will spin twice as fast. the starter is large and wrapped with heave gauge wire, it will last a long time under that load. your window and seat motors are much smaller. they won't take the abuse for long. if i were you i'd get voltage drops for them. with a starter you can go to a good starter place and ask them to put 12v "shunts" in. this will make the starter turn slower, and prolong life.

Thanks for the answer. I think that I might set my sights on finding som 56 motors for the windows and seats. HOPEFULLY they will fit!

At the same time, I converted to a THM 350 tranny, so I have a 12 volt starter already, even it spins the shit out of the engine...

I have a "good" voltage step down, but it is rated at 8 amps and NO MORE, I want to think that each motor would draw about 8 amps each, but useing two windows at once would blow the unit.

    Thanks again!

Well I am about to do this for my banger.

Good news is i am basically starting fresh since all I had was a rolling frame and engine. the wires were long gone.

    Wish me luck!

is there anyone out there that has a sketch (I'm better with pics than words) of a basic diagram that they used?

I am doing the speedster in the avatar so I sont need very much wired- just things like headlights tail lights alternator, starter, etc.
