Just wondering what info I can attain in getting my 6 volt system converted over to 12 volt. I have a 1955 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer 270 S.R.R. Hemi that runs with 6 volts. Now my main concern is not to damage the Gauges. Thanks for any help,...IRAQ Anyone with this type of car sitting around for parts or else?....
Swapping to 12v is a bit of work, but is all kinda small stuff. Here is some of the things you'll need to do for the swap: Convert generator to 12 volts Swap regulator to match new generator Install ballast to coil and distributor Install voltage drops to gauges, radio and heater, etc. Swap out 6v bulbs for 12v ones Thats the general list for about any car to convert over from 6v to 12v. Might be other small items to address on yours. Also, its usually not required to convert the starter over to 12v. However, in some cases if the starter is consistantly destroying drives, 12v conversion may help. All of the items above are things you can probably do yourself. If your not comfortable swapping the fields in the generator yourself, our shop can do it for you and supply a new regulator. Thats my shameless plug for this post. Let me know if you have other questions and good luck.
Thanks for the info...I'm going to install a 331 Hemi Chrysler Industrial in her instead of the Hemi 270...As for electrical, nothing major else needs to be mentioned you have not already said to do? I know I'll have to make motor mounts for her to fit. What about the Trannie setup, can I use the original Trans? 2 speed Powerflite. Maybe to much horse power for such a small tranny?
Powerflites were used behind Hemis from the factory. Shouldn't be a problem. It's a good tranny. I had one in a 54 DeSoto.
Great so it should bolt right up to the 331 Hemi? I hope so because I had it rebiult right before coming to IRAQ. All the questions because I'm here and not there, hard to put my hands on stuff so I ask...this is such a great forum for information.
Speedway Motors in Lincoln Ne. sells a voltage drop device called a Runtz that is designed for use with gauges.
Runtz are good little voltage drops, they've been around for a long time. If you've got your heart set on going 12v, you'll prolly just need what I posted above. 6v systems are pretty reliable and work well if you maintain everything. The 331 would be 6v (unless it was already converted over) and would easily go right into the 6v system that your old mill. Just food for thought.
I thought the 331's were '52-'54? Yea, you can run it, but you'll need a voltage regulator and the other items on that list of stuff.
mmm...the 270 would look nice in my livingroom pm me if your gettin rid of it....i know a guy that might use it in his sedan...cnat think of his name right now... .. ps....thanks for being the man!!!!hooraa!!!
