Bench testing a '37 '38 flathead 6 volt generator. Hot wired to the 6 volt battery it motors as it should but the wrong direction, from front of generator it turns counterclockwise. Does it matter which way as long as it turns? Then what about polarity?
    Thanks to all, Bob Stanley

think it has to spin the direction it will be driven--not positive (no pun intended)

I never considered direction of rotation when testing a generator this way. My guess is that the field polatity may be backwards. That's one reason to "polarize" a generator.

    Yes, positive ground.

I don’t think it makes a difference in rotation on a starter. I went to 12v battery, I just used different cables, and went negative ground.

Edit, you guys are speaking of the generator.
    Disregard my babble.
