In the picture of Johnny Boy #86...the kid looking out the window is me Denny Zimmerman. In 1956 I got a job at that filling station so I could stooge for them and learn.

How many Vega's did Charlie run is confusing to me. More than I had thought .. I think .. but I know that if I try to explain it, that I will NOT get it straight.

Ricky Jarzombek &/or Harold Seaman would be only ones to explain it properly here.

Would ENJOY seeing some picture of that fat fendered ride .. when & if you can find some.

On page 206 the orange Ollie Silva Pinto is restored and vintage racing with STAR in New England. The winged super has also been saved and restored and is shown in the Northeast. I have a ton of silva pictures. If anyone is interested I will scan them and post......

What'd he call that Pinto ? The great pumpkin I think. He sat in the middle of the car. He and Paul Richardson ran at Seekonk for a bit. At that time he ran the Gremlin with a tiny left front and sat on the right side. He was beating the locals pretty good until the track decided that a straight front axle was illegal.

Here are a few pictures of my grandpa, Dick Davis. The first pic is him at Topeka, KS in '65. Notice he is wearing his High School Letter-Man's Jacket! The next is of him in Chanute, KS in '66. Not too many years later, it was put in a hedgerow and all but forgotten. But, this past fall, he decided to go and pull it out and start fixing it back up. The next three pictures are of him getting it out.

I for one would like to see more Ollie. Especially some of the restored Big O super.

  17. I think this is the sequence of drivers in the #115: Kenny Goodermote, Joe Messina, Chuck Ely and Kenny Tremont Jr.

Yes, Kathy is Ken Tremont Sr's. daughter, and she did race awhile.

Chuck did run the photo booth at the Valley. In the mid-60's he ran a sharp looking '56 Ford, #5 with Casper the Ghost on the side.

This is the car I remember the most of John Blewett Sr. racing, always thought it was cool, even today!

Does anyone remember or have pictures of the Morin brothers from Brimfield Mass.?I believe they raced at Riverside and a few other local tracks.I believe that the driver was "Pit Morin" they would have raced in the 50s their distant cousins of mine and in the 60s when I was visiting the farm weekends the back field was full of old stock cars!

Chuck was the official photographer through the '70s and I think into the early '80s as that was the time I went and I don't remember another official photographer. He and Butch of the yellow X are brothers in law.
Chuck drove a 115 coach then a pinto that I remember.
It's nice having some one here with so much knowledge.

Before my time there .. but I "think" Paul Okrent of Huntington, NY "might" have been the photog at Riverhead (NY) Raceway for awhile.

He worked for Ansco (film) and had the first color pictures of race cars that I remember seeing. Color film & processing was both new & very expensive at that time & he got both free.

Anyhoo .. Paul passed away awhile ago and I haven't seen many (if any) pictures from his collection .. either stock cars &/or open cockpit - and he had many.

    Go to this site
    http://www.whittemorespeedway.net/default.asp
then click on Rules .. then click on Modifieds.

The other divisions are interesting too.

I LOVE their Pace Car as well.

Also of great interest is their General Admission prices.

Bert Hedges ran a 406 CI ford, but I have no idea why. Taking a guess it could be someone had a totaled passenger car and voila!!! Here is the new engine that will replace the GMC 302+ he ran previously. The 406 was fairly common in passenger cars whereas the 427 was an over the counter purchase or a real expensive option (for the time) in a passenger car.

  27. Yes, Chuck and Butch were related.

I'm not sure where the #115 coach went that Chuck drove. I know the #115 was sold to Frank Hodge in Quebec, Canada, 'cause I put the deal together. It became the "Lucky 7".

Maybe Dave Leckonby got the old #115 coach. I'll have to ask.

Along with the Yellow "X", Butch also ran the Austin Dickerman #357, the Billy Young #28 Coach and another car which was a Will Cagle built copy of Gerald Chamberlin's #76 that Will bought. Butch also drove a coupe before any of these cars. Can't remember the number (or letter, which I think it was), but it had a little devil painted next to it. I think Chuck did the artwork and lettering.
