At many tracks (Lancaster Speedway included), it's printed (the fine print) on the sign-in sheet. Drivers are in such a hurry to get into the pits and get to work on the car that 99% of them don't read what they are signing. They simply assume that they are signing an insurance document. The track is allowed to use the driver's image for whatever purposes. I am not saying it's right -- I am simply saying it exists.

Here's an example of what I was talking about earlier (if you don't want people to "steal/resell" your pics):

Thanks for the kind words on my book ("Lancaster Heroes") but it sold out this week. You might find a copy or two on Ebay or at Coastal 181's site.

I think it's getting a little silly with all the fuss about these old photos. Most, if not all of the copies were originally sold at the speedways by the photogs working at these tracks who were licensed or hired by the tracks themselves, and in some cases, hundreds of copies could have been sold of any particular photo. As the years pass, people pass on or move and these photos (that were probably paid for way back when) turn up in other collections (some have been sold at flea markets and antique shops). It's impossible to tell where they came from. Even the photog who took the photo at the track probably doesn't know how many copies he made and sold. Now, many years later, everybody's gettin' their undershorts twisted about who's photos are being sold or spread around the internet. No one ever dreamed (except maybe Al Gore) of there ever being an internet that had the power to present any photo into every living room in the world.
Original photos could never be mistaken from that of printed copies. If someone wants to make a dollar for selling a copy (if he can), good luck to him. If he wants to sell his original track photo, well it's been paid for many years ago by himself or his father or his uncle.
I myself have a nice little collection of original track photos that I've put up here and other places for everyone's enjoyment. I don't give a rats ass who copies them, in fact I hope everyone copies them. Enjoy. When we're all dead, no one will care anymore. Too many old track photos will never see the light of day because they're either lost or destroyed. If everyone was selfish about these photos, there never would be a site like this. I would hope that we all could just enjoy these photos that, in another era, we would NEVER have had the pleasure to see.
To all who post these photos, thanks for sharing a piece of racing history. Keep up the good work.

  4. I've got to thank everyone who has posted pic's on this site. I'm guilty of using the pictures of George Cousins, but I just had too. You see, my sister and his daughter grew up together and till now, I've never been able to find any pictures of his cars. What a treat and surprise for my sis when I e-mailed her these. Maybe now, she will try to re-connect with his daughter. 40 years is long enough don't you think? Bless the internet.:)
As for my own pic's, take them, enjoy them, badmouth them if you want. Just as long as someone see's them, I'm happy. Good therapy.

  5. John, there are official track photos and then there are fan with a Brownie photos. The fan these days is claiming the same copyright as official NASCAR/pro photographers.

Here are some pictures of my cars through the years. From the flathead in '66 to my restored car at Williams Grove in 2007. The red, white & blue #2 was run at Middletown, Lebanon Valley, Flemington, Reading, Grandview, East Windsor. After it sat rusting away for 20 years it was restored in '01 and ran on the pavement at Loudon, NH, Clarmont, NH & Flemington. Now it's retired to the garage! If anyone has any pictures of these cars I would really like to see them.

The coupe next to Dutch's Camaro is his former car, renumbered 77, and driven by his son,Dean Hoag. The 93 is either Ben Stephens or Ed Rafferty. Track is Shangri-La.[IMG]

What brands/models of fuel injection were used back then? They don't look like any I've seen on Can AM or drag cars. Thanks, Barry

I believe that blue car was driven by a Jack Flistock. I have a photo, but don't know how to post it. It's number 6jr. Looks exactly like the one that is posted. Same rub rails and bumpers.

    For BKHRS:

The majority, if not all, were Hilborn fuel injection units used on modifieds back in the 60's & 70's.

Check out the hood on the #7 coupe in Bullfather's post. Looks like a 48-53 Chevy truck hood...pretty unique!

Awhile back, when talking about Harold Seaman .. Randomrodder mentioned a Hudson Terraplane street rod & attributed itto Harold.

    I didn't know .. so I asked .. That's not Harold's car &/or work .. it's that of Boots Jakonski (spelling?) .. another true craftsman!!!

Going back to an older post again. Although I too thought it was .. the car that Peggy had was NOT the Chevette. It was the car the preceeded it .. the car that Chargin' Charlie won many races with at Freeport (NY), etc..

The Chevette came later and was a lighter version of pretty much the same car.

The car Peggy had is in the Jarzombek race shop, currently undergoing restoration by Ricky Jarzombek. .... The car that started out as the Chevette is right now being restored by Harold Seaman, in his own shop. Harold is working diligently on it & intends to have it ready for the annual three day Old Timers extravaganza at Louden (NH).

Yes, at Trenton (NJ) NASCAR outlawed the Chevette. Their explanation being that the body was too radically offset &/or narrow (the right rear shock was outside the body). The car was reskinned and was legal after that.

Both these cars carried various skins and at times were either the Chevette, or at some time in their life skinned as a Vega, Pinto &/or even Cavalier.

The car that started out as the Chevette was later owned by Eddie (Cecil Palmtree) Partridge and campainged at Stafford (CT) as an SK modified and then raced by one or two more owners after that.

Some where along the line, Charlie had a falling out with the promoters at Riverhead and never raced on the Island after that.

This is Billy Stief out over turns 1 & 2 at the incomparable Reading Fairgrounds. Billy took a bad one this night. After the car came to rest, Billy claimed he wasn't, at all certain he had survived this horrific flip. When everything came to rest and while shaking the cobwebs from his head.....he thought he heard music. "Could I be in Heaven?" he asked. Apparently, a young teen couple were curled up in the front seat with the old 8 track playing music. Billy finally figured he was ok when he could move all of his extremities. Luckily for the young couple sitting in the car, they escaped a potentially critical situation.
