  10. Take the time to go through all the pages. You won't regret it if you are into Mods at all. If you can find the time, well, then you're missing out on a treasure drove of photos.

Hello am new to the discussion and the forum. I am origionally from Westfield Ma, and grew up frequenting Riverside Park & Stafford.

I have run across a couple pic's here and there of what appears to be VW Bettle modified type cars that may have been raced at one of the NY tracks .. Can anyone provide any further info ?

  14. There was an import class at Lebanon Valley for Several years.

VW driven by who I think was Karl Hacker was successful.

Another Toyota or Datsun car, that was built like a 2/3rds scale modified was dominant. Think his name was Tony Lapore or Laporta.

  15. I'm still doin' homework on this.

Turns out the 115L may very well have been the #28 that Correllis and Jelly drove.

Leckonby may have bought the #28 from Billy Young after Butch got out.

Even living a few miles away, I always thought Leck got the #115.

I'm still trying to find out if the X coach is the #115 coach. But if the above is true, this makes sense.

Tremont said he sold it to Bruce Burger.

    Stay Tuned.

The 28,115.& the X were differnt cars .the same person may have bent the tubing on the X & 115 ,But 3 differnt people Paid for them

The 115L was the old car that was around the shop ,Dave put a motor in it ,used tires from out back an Started his Driving .

Any Word on How Chuck Ely is doing ?

RJE give some post numbers so we can SEE the same cars as you are. Bob Hackel ran the 97 VW at the Valley an was One of the Best VW's in the Whole country. Tony Laporta Built a Datsun I think, Butch Jelly drove Norm Madsens "Mini Cooper " The Hacker Bros ran a few times An Went on to be Champions in the ISMA Touring Div Running the Castrol Oil cars

Lancaster Speedway (near Buffalo) raced them in a class called Mini-Stocks from 1968-1973. There were VWs, Datsuns, Cortinas, Renault 4CVs, Simcas, Toyotas and Mini-Coopers, to name a few. Several Modified drivers got their starts in Mini-Stocks.

They became popular just as gasoline jumped from 35 cents to 50 cents to $1/gal. and these "cute little foreign cars" suddenly became fashionable to drive on the streets.

I had some posted here but other members complained that this was a "Modifieds-only" thread, so I took them down. E-mail me at lancasterheroes@yahoo.com if you want to see some photos.

Former Lancaster owner/promoter Jim Vollertsen also promoted indoor Mini-Stock races (covered the hockey rink floor) in Rochester, NY, (War Memorial arena) in 1968 -- I still have the program. A number of Modified drivers, including Bill Rafter and Roger Treichler, built cars for it. The program's photo captions also list Lee Osborne and Maynard Troyer as participants!

Holland (NY) Speedway, Perry (NY) Speedway, Ransomville (NY) Speedway and Cayuga Speedway (Ontario Canada) and Merrittville Speedway (Ontario Canada) all used to run them in the early '70s in the Western N.Y. area.

On my last trip to Bowman Gray Stadium (Winston-Salem, NC) in 2000, Charlie Curry was racing an orange VW Beetle in the Stadium Stocks class that was painted to (kinda) resemble Richie Evans' cars.

  20. We're losing them quickly these days. Hubert Hensley passed away last week.
Hubert was the uncle of Jimmy and Billy, and was the builder of all their cars. He also built Perk Brown's #0, William Mason's (2) last #45 coupes driven by Gerald Compton and Satch Whorley. He built cars for Lloyd Ashby, Hank Stevens,etc.. The tell tale sign was a Dodge/Plymouth coupe body and the high turned, tuned headers.

You guys know a lot more about this than I do, so I though I would throw some fuel on the fire! HAHA. Now here's Jeff Fleury in a similar coach at the Valley. Also, is there a connection between J & F Speed Shop (on this car) and J & F Enterprises (on the Jelley X car)?

picture 5202 with the cars at Flemington. the #39 is Al Tasnady of course. that car was the first built, small block injected chevy. Bud Olsen drove it before Tas.

The #95 is Hoop Schiable from Upper Black Eddy, Pa. That car is still around and has the mud left on it from Harmony where is finished 2nd I think in 69.

This is in the mid 60's, notice no driving suits, only T shirts
