I was under the impression that it was that radical offset coupe before Jaws that was outlawed.

Everyone has seen the picture of it up on what ought to have been the driver's side, with the front axle nearly torn off, and headed through the catch fence.

That car came back post Dover as the coupe with the red/white/blue Harley styled numeral one.

I don't remember when, but at some point NASCAR banned all cars with the off-set engines. I do remember that Charlies' Chevette was banned in the eighties becuase of the chassis off set.

I found this while searching google images for 61 olds sedan photos. pretty cool:

Whitey Gorsuch is the starter in this photo. Whitey was recently inducted into the FOAR Score Hall of Fame at their annual dinner in Niagara Falls, NY. Whitey was famous for his manner of starting races right down the middle of the cars as they came off turn four! This photo is from the Ron Lincoln collection with the famous driver, Franklinville, NY's Pete Tingue. This photo was made at Holland in the early 1960s. The car is a 1961 Oldsmobile, the marque driven to many wins and championships by Tingue

  19. hey check this out, as you know being from Long Island one of best modified drivers around theses part was Artie Tappen. I've posted a few photos of his car here on this thread. As you may also know I do a racing website called www.PitstopPitbull.com, I was down at Riverhead Raceway this weekend taping the action for a DVD of the kids and go-karts. One of the kids I interviewed was a kid named Artie, I soon found out he was a thrid generation driver as his father and grandfather were also named Artie.....as in Artie Tappen!!! Really awesome, his father and grandfather were both on hand and I got a few words with the old shoe himself and told him about this site and how we've been talking about some of the drivers and his name came up on more then one occassion, now we can add it again! :O)

Peter, the winged mods were only at a special open comp event at Staffford called Modified Madness.
