  4. That was a little hot rod ingenuity on a low budget built race car. :D

  5. I was going to post that before, it caught my eye an hour or two ago when checking out the thread. Now let's see someone build it today!

Corky Cookman in the stands, I heard no one was injuried. Anyone have any info on this incident??? I know Corky died in the old sand banks of Thomspon, after they had hard time getting to him they decided to get rid of the sand bank and place walls around the the whole track.

I think, one fatality and several injured. Sandbank was long gone at Thompson when Corky died.

I forget the year that Corky ended up in the stands at Stafford, but I got to know Corky fairly well when I did a feature on him for Circle Track magazine. Anyway, later that same season; I'm talking to Corky as they're doing driver intros at the Turkey Derby, and when the announcer, I don't remember his name, but he was quite the buffoon, begins to introduce Corky, he says something to the effect "You might want to move a few rows back folks because earlier this he ended up in the granstand" Corky (and everybody else that heard it) couldn't beleive what was just said. Corky was quite upset, being reminded of that incident moments before climbing behind the wheel at the often trecherous Wall Stadium!

  10. Back to the grind! Seemed to be a lot of freak incidents around that time from Islip to Riverside Park to Thompson in a span of a year or two. Some didn't turn out so well and a few didn't make it out alive from racers to crew members and fans. I got to say I wasn't around any of them when they happened at Islip Speedway, it always seemed like the nights we didn't go to the track.

As a kid growing up in Idaho in the 60s, my hero was local driver Kenny Hamilton, who drove owner Art Sugia's "Pink Lady Special" Super Modified sponsored by The Eastside Cafe & Lounge in Ontario, Oregon. At that time the Grant King built roadster ran a big block Chevy and you could really feel the thunder as it was charging out of turn four and on down the straight in front of the stands at Meridian Speedway. Thinking about it still gives me a thrill after nearly 40 years.

Kenny Hamilton has driven the "Pink Lady" to an estimated 300+ main event wins in the car's 40 year racing history including several Copper Classic victories at Phoenix.

As some of you may know, Kenny is the father of famous Indy driver Davey Hamilton from Idaho. I think Davey had a damn good mentor...

Here is a link to more info on Kenny's legendary racing history... http://www.ihrs.org/humanitarian/hamilton/index.html

  17. Thanks Elf. I see you have a nice shot of the Ira Bromley #23 car. Quite a few drivers got their start in one of Bromley's cars.

    CORKY COOKMAN...

The Stafford Crash was in 83 , He ran over a wheel (Greg Sacks ?) in a pill up that was started by the spinning 10 of John Falconi , the 43 of Mike Hornat had also cleared the wall . The terrible accident saw some 30 spectators injured...
Has for Corky's fatal crash , you can watch the News repport here on youtube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLOEQ7DumE0
