Great picture of Dick Clark Bullfather! That car is located about 10 miles from me. It has gone full circle and ended up back in the hands of Ray Hedger, who built and owned the car for Dick. It has been fully restored to the same as in the photo with a new Rabbit body on it as seen in this photo I took about 2 months ago...

Here are some shots I got from the Alabama Racing Pioneers Association site. These were drivers who raced in alabama, Georgia and Tennessee in the fifties and sixties. You may recognize some names. These guys had some beautiful and fast cars back in the day.

    This is Bobby Allison

Donnie Allison. This car had a front mounted blower.

Harold Fryar of the racing brothers Harold and Freddie Fryar.

This is Nero Steptoe from Columbus Georgia. He won the Main Event in Birmingham once on three wheels. The wheel came off the left front about midway thru the race, he was in the lead and he never let off. He said he was afraid to let off because the wheel would dig in and wreck him.

I would love to see the setup of that front mounted blower motor... I assume this was before electric fans... I wonder how it cooled?

Good question. I really don't know how it cooled. My uncle had a 1953 studebaker about the same time with a front mounted blower on a packard engine and I do not remember how it was cooled. I have no one I can ask now.

  15. Great additions Olustee Bus.

  16. Aweosme photos Olustee Bus if you got more bring them on! Love them! Bobby Allison did a lot of traveling back in the day. For a few years he raced out of Florida made his way up every weekend raced Islip and one or two other tracks.

Back when these cars raced. Not many caution flags were waved. You races around a wreck or stalled car. The red flag omly came out if the track was completly blocked. so plenty pf air flow around the radiators. Most of the flathead guys did not run a fan as it took about 5 horsepower to pull it. On the 88 of D Allison he said to cool keep the car up to speed. It was a shame but this car only raced a few times. It was totaled in a wreck in huntsville. DA said it had a hard time getting the front tire up to operating temp and was a hand full to drive. On The Hugh Babb Studebaker no room for a fan. After the Gordon Bishop wreck in the 53 starliner Hugh installed the powerplant in a 33 ford coupe. {{Right before he went to work for the chevy race team in Atlanta}} Both of these creations were worked on by Bo Fields. He did a lot of the fab work at JP Rottens Birmingham racing garage. To be sure next time I see him I will ask... Bobby.

JP Rotton is my uncle. I may have met you at a pioneers awards dinner. I talked to someone who was restoring an old track car.

I did know that the engine in the studebaker ended up for a short time in a 34 coupe.

I never knew what happened to the studebaker. Was it demolished. I sure it has been to the crusher by now.

Some more of the pioneers photos should be posted here. I will do some more later.
    Thanks for the response.
