    Bullfather,
do you know anything more about the Lark pictured in the latest posting? You listed Ed Yarrington as the driver. Is this a Studebaker powered car? Studebaker is an unusual choice for a race car and I was just curious.

  9. Just got back from the Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium, 1st event at the place in over a year. The track looks like I might be sold and re opened, awesome turn out not a seat to be had today! Jimmy "$howtime" Blewett won and knocked about everyone on his way. The crowd was steaming mad at him, he cause a few accidents on his way to victory lane. He said in victory lane "The villian always wins!" wow!!!!!!!! I know Jimmy, good guy but a different guy behind the wheel!

Here's a few from Central Pa. The #2 flathead car is from the 50's, a car my dad wrenched on. The rest of the pics are from Williams Grove early-mid '60s.

I just want to say thank you to all who have posted and shared these great photos on this thread, most especially The Bullfather. This thread is a daily stop for me on the net. The coupe and coach bodied cars were long gone in our area by the mid 60's. I suppose they were used up. It amazes me that the old bodies could still be found on the tracks in the northeast up through the 70's. I've often wondered if a 37-38 Chevy can be found in the northeast today?

Everytime I look at this thread I think of the late Jan Games (Junkyard Jan) who used to regularly post on the HAMB. She would have dearly loved all these cool photos that's been posted since her passing. If there ever was a modified junkie, it was her.

Ya'll sure had some great looking rides up there in the northeast!!!! Ya gotta love em' !. Thanks again to all who have posted.

  21. You've come up with a fine batch today Pete. Loving the Fireball Robertson ones. It's such a shame we lost him at such an early age.

Here are some photos taken from the Alabama Racing Pioneers collection.

Below is racing in the original "Iron Bowl" built in a hollow just outside of Birmingham Alabama. The track was just about a perfect circle. It was built right after WWII and alot of the drivers were war veterans. I was about 4 years old when this was taken but I do remember racing at the Iron Bowl.

In the mid fifties, Racing in Birmingham moved from the Iron Bowl to the Fairgrounds Speedway at the Alabama State Fairgrounds in Bham.

Hear is notorious "Hog Barn" that many a driver ended up in - with their car! Number F-97 was Red Farmer who probably put his share or drivers in the "Hog Barn". Never try to pass Red Farmer on the outside.

Sometimes in the Sixties, the Birmingham Fairgrounds 5/8 mile track was paved. Not only that but the "Hog Barn" name was changed to a more politically correct "Swine Pavillion". This is Red Farmer in time trials Driving the Long Lewis Ford. Long - Lewis was a Ford Dealership (and still is I think) in Birmingham long involved in racing.

Jodie Ridley of North Georgia drove in Birmingham alot. He drove in the Winston Cup Series and the Busch Series. Don't know where this photo was taken.

Finally, here is an early photo of Friday Hassler's racecar. Friday was a legendary driver from Tennessee who was killed at Daytona at the Speedway,

  24. Some great shots there Olustee.
Thanks for the kind words, Al. But, Pete's the man with the line on the photos. I have my share but he puts me to shame.
Here is a shot of West Hampton 1/2 mile oval that only ran for a short while in the late 60s/early 70s and the now defunct West Hampton Dragstrip. The last of three we had on the island.
The buildings to the right used to contain ICBMs. I worked with a trucking concern that filled the tombs with sand and then covered the tombs with concrete. All the missles and upright lift devices were taken out in the dark of night over a period of time.
