The red Studebaker #87 was driven by the 1963 Weissglass Speedway Track Champion Elwood "Doggie'" Hewitt from Saugerties,N.Y. You can read "Dog" on the roof in the photo. He ran this car at Oldbridge,Trenton and Middletown after he left Weissglass. His son Elwood, builds Pro-Stocks at Accord and was the Pro-Stock Champ a few years back also in a #87.

^ I like the pinstriping on jerry pearls 40 ford, almost looks more like a hot rod than a stock car.

  9. That #7 Mustang II bodied Jerry Dostie car is good looking. Finally see what a Mustang II is good for!!!

  16. Brought one to mine also. The X-3 Vega was in storage in the Butler building Jim Hendrickson Jr, Tom and I rented for our cars and projects. It now resides at Marty Himes Museum. Jim Kelly has two fine Hot Rods, one a BB powered Model A. He's quite a builder. He has been looking for the Monza bodied modified he ran before he broke his back in an accident. If anyone knows what became of the Monza please let me know. It was run at Islip and Riverhead.

If you hold the Crtl button down and use your scroll wheel you can enlarge the photo enough to see the X-3 under wraps in front of the 59 Chevy.

All those Danbury pictures just continue to amaze me...not only the cars, but the absolutely pristine condition of the fairgrounds. It was a real shame that they closed up and tore down that facility.

I was at Martinsville VA modified race when Richie Evans was killed, in turns 3 & 4 during pratice. Richie was one of the greatest drivers ever in the old Modified. Maybe better than Richie, was Ray Hendericks from Richmond VA, driving the 'Flying 11 (eleven).

I joined this thread too late to see all the pictures:mad:! Did anyone post any pictures of the Ray Hendericks Flying 11 modified? He was "the" man here in the South, both on dirt (South Boston, VA) and asphalt. If yeah, can you gimme the page number. I'm gonna keep up from now on.

  27. Moparjack, there are photos of Ray's coupe somewhere in here. Take your time and stroll through the whole thread. It makes for some interesting viewing and reading.

The Danbury Fairgrounds were absolutely beautiful, right up to the time it was torn down to make room for the shopping mall. Too many tracks were torn down for shopping malls all over this country. With more and more people shopping online (or not shopping at all), the malls are now expendable. What goes around comes around.
