Here are some pictures from 1967-68 at Middletown, NY of the car that we are currently in the process of restoring/hot rodding. 1933 Chevy driven by Tom Eagans of Peekskill, NY. I'd love to find more original pictures, if anybody has some.

Hey Pete, where did you find that image of Gant; it says it's from the Harrold Page collection. Harrold's the guy that does pinstriping for me. He's lettered a great number of southern modifieds over the years and has a huge photo album of mods he's done. Here's Harrold doing the Raker Roadster...

I have a question: Using a Scout frame, what would the lowest possible right height be in the rear w/o modifying the "kickup" on the frame?

I'm building a early 70s asphalt mod, with a coupe body. Does anyone know what the lowest ride height would be (in the rear) using a Scout frame?

  19. I'm familar with the Scout frame, but not the dimensions.

But you can figure out real easy on your own. Measure the distance from the bottom of the main rail to the bottom of the rear kick-up.

What's the diameter of your rim/tire? Take 1/2 of that (radius). Let's say it's 14". Then add 1.5" which is the radius of the rear axle tube. Then add what ya' want for suspension travel. Let's say 3". The total is 18.5", which is how high the rear kick will be off the ground. Subtract the rear kick height from the main rail and you have the mainrail distance off the ground. EZ calculation and all your build can then be figured off these measurements.

You'll probably want to add more rear kick if you want real low main rails.

    Modifieddriver,

Thanks! After I posted I started thinkin' about it and came up with pretty much the same as what you said. I'm gonna put the frame right on the garage floor tonight & measure, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna want to have the rear kickup in the 18-19" higher than main rail range. Thanks again for the prompt response!

BTW, what's the frame you used in the "?" car (your avatar) & what are your ride heights (approx.)?

  22. Rich I believe it might have been from racerreunion.com or something like that, I would have to find it. I have a few more of Gant racing mods, so there might be other photos he took.

This photo was in the forum for LongIslandJam.com which I used to submit and work for, I'm still associated with them. Sadly, we just lost Roy, here's a photo his son just posted and I thought I'd share it! Roy was a great man behind the wrench, having worked on modifieds for at least 5-6 decades. Roy would always seem rough around the edges, but once you got to know him, he was always friendly and had many words of wisdom in and out of racing! Going to miss ya Roy this season at the track!

I raced a URC Sprint Car at Fonda in the 60s and there was nothing to keep cars out of the river back then! We just mostly all tried to use caution back there in the back, if ya know what i mean.

"Hard Luck" James Harding, received this nickname after this wreck! See, James first time out he was in this car, he almost destroyed it that day. He came back a week or so later and this was the after math! James Harding only raced twice before retiring!

Hey Pete, Harrold lettered more than the Mason Bros. 45, his scrap book of cars he put a brush to looks like a who's who of southern mods.
