  2. I had lunch with Cagle yesterday. I asked him about this wreck and he remembered it like it was yesterday  .

I said a guy from Canada by the name of Foley running about 11th hit the wall in turn 4 and started the carnage. I watched the tape and ya' can see the lead pack of cars and a wisp of smoke in turn 4 behind them. Confirms Cagle's story.

Cagle was running the #12 NJ white '55 Chevrolet for "Lucky" Jordan. He said the right side of the car was ripped off and he got outa' the car without having to climb through a window. He also said a '37 Ford was on it's side right in front of him when things stopped moving.

Again, I replayed the tape, and sure enough, there's the #12 with the LF of a '57 Chevy on the '55 where the RR quarter was and an old Ford on it's side in front of him. The tape continues and there's a shot of the inside of the #12.

Cagle said they pulled the engine, transmission and a few other key parts off the car and left it there. He said it wasn't worth taking the rest back to Jersey .

Cagle said he's never seen the tape and would love to buy a copy of it. Do ya' know where I can get it? He doesn't have a computer, so I can't send him what's on "You Tube".

  3. Gotta dig Marty Robbins' Y-block powered "Devil Woman" modified from early 60s.

Here's a new model kit (at least "I" haven't seen it before). Looks like a pretty neat kit....and a 4-in-1

    EDIT:

SORRY TO REPORT...THIS KIT IS MISLEADING!!!! UPON OPENING BOX, THE STOCK CAR SPECIFIC PARTS ARE NOT INCLUDED. NO ROLLCAGE AND NO WIDE FIVE WHEELS. I'M VERY DISSAPOINTED.

  10. I captured this David Kimble drawing of Don Edmunds' supermodified this morning.

The car was also featured in Hot Rod magazine in the late-60's.

  12. Here are a couple of CAD renderings that I did. It's Edmunds' 4-bar version of that super.

"Hey John, can you tack weld the bumper brackets on My Mopar sometime???" Tony Nancy to Milner after Milner uncorked the headers on the coupe for the duel with falfa, at the gas station....:D

The late Rusty Creeden at Accord:

    ONTEORA SPEEDWAY:
"And then there's the racetrack. With Raymond Davis's property, Dick Lean's money, and Shurter's name and racing know-how, the three men opened the Onteora Speedway in Olive Bridge right across from Shurter's Inn. Shurter was V.P. and promoter. "Racetrack's still there. Wood's rotted out, concession stands fell, but the speedway had concrete stands so the stands are there." Shurter was a contender, his name can be found in racing history books, he's raced tracks from Woodstock to Cuba, but he didn't race his own track. "The other guys saw it as a conflict." Eventually, "Mrs. Golden bought the track because she didn't like to hear the noise. That put an end to racing." Shurter started racing stock cars in Daytona Beach in '36. The racetrack back then was part beach (two and a half miles worth) and part pavement. "Every time you went through the corner it was different, there'd be ruts. And it was strictly stock cars. These were cars off the road." Shurter drove his own car down to Florida. "My wife put the number on it in Jet Banami," a white soapy spray. Shurter built his own cars, 12 cars in all. He named his daughter "Raecine," partly after his love of racing. Shurter also ran midgets, the open-wheel cars. When he went to Cuba, in 47/48, "We not only had to bring our own cars, but the cars for the Cubans to race. That was one of Batista's deals. Now it's all money, more money you had the better car you could buy." Back when he raced in Woodstock, it was all handmade cars, using parts and pieces of other cars.
What attracted Shurter to racing? "The attraction was speed." It seems that one thing to be learned from Shurter's life is to follow your obsessions-Larry Shurter loved speed, and cut a substantial swath with his life. Luckily, his daughter Raecine is at work on a book that archives the photos and stories of her local legend father. It's a book I'll buy and read, and will surely be one any Olive resident would enjoy."

  15. I remember D.D. "REBEL" Harris running at Lebanon Valley Speedway. He drove a flathead '34 Ford coupe # "AAA" for Joey Lawrence(?) in the early 60's. He was a top runner until he got killed racing at Oneonta.

The coupe had cut down window openings and an old delivery truck spring cushioned seat. Story has it Rebel went to flipping end for end. The g-force of the flips compressed the seat cushion enough that his seat belts loosened up and he slid right out from under them and then out the large window opening. We know this isn't healthy.

Shortly after, Lebanon Valley initiated safety rules that mandated ya' couldn't use that type of seat and limited the amount of seat cushion material to 1" or 2" maximum. The rule still exists.

My buddy, who still runs a car at Lebanon today, was a Rebel fan. I was a "Stretch" VanSteenburg fan. He drove a '55 Chevy, #99 (I think).

I think Joey Lawrence is correct. I believe he was from the Newburgh, NY area and fielded cars for many drivers over the years.

The #AAA got me thinking about Bobby Albert's AAA Speed Shop.

Frank, do you ever visit the Dirt Track Digest website?

In 2001 I was told by martys son Ronnie this car is in Texas.. In the middle photo the guy looking through the window is the late Bobby Hamiltons dad.. He and the crew at Hamiltons Garage prepared all of martys short track cars.. Notice that the car is a 5 window with the B post removed to make a larger opening and the 3 window look. This was very popular in the mid tenn area..Good post John..Thanks Bobby..

Driver sits so far back, the 5 window converted to 3 window may have been best for visibility.

  19. What a memory I have ;) . Took awhile to remember Joey Lawrence's name, but it came to me as I was typing the story about "Rebel".

Hadn't ever been there before. Good site. Just got the scoop on what's happenin' at the Valley.

  20. Here are some of my dad's cars from the early 60s in the Great White North.

Just captured this quick video from the back of my 37 Chevy Modified. Started on pole...finished fourth. There was lots of great action behind me for the entire race, but the batteries gave out after just a few laps.

Tas in Dick Cozze's #44 coach with the unumbered car. Looks like Flemington from the fence. Paul Kuhl loved purple.

It was actually Reading, 1970, with Kenny Brightbill in the #19 coach.

I got some pretty good pictures of our 1970's vintage 1937 Chevy coupe racing at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, NY.

    Here's our Chevy #65 and Rob Casti's #23, 1937 Plymouth:

And here's our coupe racing against our 1965 Oldsmobile Street Stocker:
