I joined this board for the vintage oval track modifieds forum. I am the same age as John, and apprecite the fine collection of photos he has. He has shared some photos of the not-so-famous, most of which I remember,as well as the famous.
And as far as the VWs, Toyotas,Datsuns, etc., they were built in the in "hot rod" tradition, tires, wheels, carbs, kinda like "tuners" are now.

  2. I was going to say the same thing. many people join the HAMB just for this thread alone.
Word has been getting out that this is the place to come for vintage Modifieds.

Now another word.......WORD........this was originally a 60s-70s Vintage Oval Track Modified Thread, when it first started to veer off, there was a lot of grumbling. I don't think we lost any viewers but the grumbling has ceased.

There are other threads for Midgets, Late models and such and by all rights they should be posted there. But, as long as no one is complaining I sure as heck aren't.
I save a majority of the photos posted, not all, just the ones I like which are about 95 % LOL.

Enjoy the show and let the other stuff roll off your back, it doesn't mean anything in view of what's going on in the world today anyway.

  3. The kind folks that run this joint call the shots and do a GREAT job doing it.

The old race cars are traditional. Most of the folks that out grow the racing scene migrate over to doing HOT RODS. So the connection exists.

How many X race car builders are now doing hot rods? A bunch!! How many X race car drivers have a hot rod in the garage? A bunch.

I already have the Lancaster Heros Book on the coffee table, so I've seen most of those pics already. Another bunch of the pics here come over from the 3-Wide site.

I like'm all, even after seeing them for the second or third time around.

I saw the pics from Vegas and scanned through them at light speed. Rat rod junk that doesn't represent anything I'm interested in.

So, guess I'm sayin' the guys here must have the same opinion of that stuff, so please live with their decisions.

NOW, BACK TO OUR NORMALLY SCHEDULED BROADCAST

All I can say is WOW! This thread could easily be turned into one heck of a book.

I started at Seekonk Speedway (Ma) in 71. I bounced around the New England scene till a stint in the military unitl 82. From 83 till 90 I was back and traveling.

I will most definitely be giving this a plug on my column called "Pipe Smoke" at www.motorsportsnews.net John

You are absolutely correct. Hot rods and racers have a very strong historical connection, whether it be drags, salt flats or short track racers. Thanks again to everybody who posted pics of modifieds. It is what mostly brought me here, too. I eat this stuff up!!

George Boss (15) is chased by Merv Treichler at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, 1972. This was a rare visit (one of two) by Merv's Gil Bruss-owned dirt Corvair to the track. Gordon Reinig photo.

  23. Wasn't Landry a western, NY driver?

I always remembered Bergin in the M-6 and Judkins 2x. Judkins still fields a race car in Florida. His grandson, Ryan Preece is knocking them dead in the NASCAR Modified Tour. Won Matinsville last fall.

AND..............Dr.John, I do appreciate ALL your old racing car posts :):D.

I used to be just enthralled with his writing
