I always enjoyed watching the 'Flying Dutchman' when he would come down to Wall & New Egypt. His cars were always immaculate, as were Alan's when he raced.

  5. Freddie was a hero in these parts, his name still lives on in many drivers that race today. Buddy of mine used to work with him, Dave Brigati, he always gives back to the man he looked up in modified racing.

It was an honor to know him.

  7. Freddie was friend of mine. I'd go down to his shop T&F Auto Body and hang out or hang out in the pits after the races at Islip. He always had a smile for you, fed you, gave you a beer, nothing he wouldn't do for you. And his family was the greatest also. We truly lost a great man when he went to the great bull ring up in the sky. RIP Freddie.

I once had my parents bring their car down to Freddie's shop for damage in an accident and they said I was their son. He all but did the job for nothing. God Bless you Freddie you will never be forgotten.

I didn't know him that well (saw him in the pits after the races at Riverhead, mostly "hey good run" or stuff like that) but he seemed like a good guy who always had a smile and absolutely immaculate equipment. Always enjoyed watching him race.

That No. 96 Mustang II ("Huff") is Forrest Huff. Started racing Street Stocks at Lancaster (and other tracks) around '73 and graduated to Modifieds.

I received my copy of Dr. John's book, "Lancaster Heroes" the other day. I have only just skimmed through the book, reading bits here and there, but I can say that it appears to be very well written. It is also crammed full of excellent photos of mostly vintage modifieds from the 60s and 70s, with some Late Models, Street and Mini Stocks toward the end of the book.

John obviously loves the subject he writes about and I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any fan of early modifieds. It is a valuable addition to any short track modeler's library as well. I give it two thumbs up! Thanks, John! I will be spending many hours with my nose in this book.

BTW, I also recommend you grab a copy before they're all gone. I understand this is a limited edititon.

I believe Caprara was the owner...and "Jeep" HERBERT was one of several drivers, including Pete Corey who lost a leg in a crash driving one of the #37 coupes.

  22. My wife bought me one for Xmas a couple of years ago. Great pictures.

I never went to Lancaster, but many of the same modifieds raced at FultonRaceway, just north of Syracuse. That track switched to dirt years ago and was just purchased by a race team owner. Hope that means it'll be around for a few more years before the condo builders get the property.

  23. Your right about the Jeep comment, thanks for notice!

The M-6 was sponsored by Walker Motor Sales out of Palmer, MA and was owned by BeBe Zalinski (spelling?). I first saw it run in 1959 at Riverside Park with Dix Dixon aboard. It was the ride in which Les Ley was killed at the Park in the early 60's. After Dixon drove it I believe Buddy Krebs and Gene Bergin were amongst the drivers at the Park.

  28. Folks forget, but Geoff Bodine had a rear engined Super he ran at Oswego. Wasn't successful and he went back to modifieds.

It was a converted Indy car, wasn't it?
