I am looking at a 60 Chevy 2 dr ht that a friend has, he said he heard that it wasn't a real common car in a Bel Air. Does anyone have any info? Thanks!
I know they made them in 1959...cannot vouch for 1960 belair hard top but would be willing to bet in favor.
They were ugly in 1960, they were ugly in 1982, and yup, they're still just as ugly today. The flattop is the worst offender by far, though... The Bubbletop could, with work, be pretty darn nice
My Dad bought one identical to the Ermine HT in this brochure. I bought it when I came home from Viet Nam. I think by uncle (the Chevy dealer) sold it to him because it was hard to move. If you wanted a stylish HT, you probably wanted the Impala upgrades. I'm partial to them except mine was a 6 cyl Powerglide. What a turd. Going from a 421 SD 4 spd to a 6cyl auto. is a real eye opener! You'll see a lot more Impala HTs than Belair's. I don't think the rarity makes them valuable. My dad used to brag about not having to buy floor mats for the already rubber floor mats.
60 Bel Air 2 dr hardtop sitting in a backyard locally. Tryed to buy it but they'd rather see it rot down?
according to the chevrolet chronicle, they made bel-airs in 2 door hardtop, 4 door hardtop. 6 and 8 cyl. but, it has no production numbers. either way, it's a 2 door hardtop, so get it.
Y-Blokkah - are you nuts!!!!!!???? That roofline is bust a nut gorgeous, and those horizontal fins are just awesome. Wrong wrong wrong.
I saw a nice 60 two door hardtop at a local car show this summer. The guy that owned it told me he had bought one new in 1960, he dated his wife in it and they had drove it on their honeymoon. I was a little surprised to see that six under the hood. He told me that the one he bought new was powered by the 348 with 3 deuces on it.
Yeah its a pretty cool car, nice to find a 2 dr ht in anything 59 or 60 gm, just hadn't seen a lot of bel airs before. Thanks for the info!
Yep, they made them and they are a great looking car with the Bel Air Sport Coupe being more scarce than it's Bel Air Post Sedan counterpart. They're kind of like a cleaned up looking Impala with only 4 tail lights vs. the Impala's 6 lights and they have a cleaner, more simple "rocket" trim for side trim with a more modestly decorated interior.
saw quite few in early 60's in the central valley-alot were 348 4spd cars as well--way less than Impalas though
Not sure what the actual production numbers were, but you sure don't see very many of them. Here is mine. 235/3spd/really no options other than deluxe heater.
I like the understated Belair trim level on the '60. Gives it that 'get down to business' vibe. When I was a kid, a guy had a 2drHT Impala that was the first 'factory' 4-spd I'd ever seen.
And not many cars rot out like an abandoned '59 or '60 Chevy, takes it to another level. I think they hang onto them just 'cuz we can't have them. Bob
Wow! I can't believe this is real... This original 60 Bel Air was bought at an estate sale last Friday. There were 20+ fiftyfive to late sixties classics for sale. A 68 Charger, serveral Chevelles, a 56 Crown Vic, numerous 55-57 Bel Airs (I think the old man liked these the best, or didn't like them because they were all taken apart) A Coronet, a Duster these were sold. A few trucks and rotten boats. It was Cash and Carry. I didn't have much time to look the car over there were eight buyers there. Here is what I got. Not running 134k miles 235 3 speed. Only bad rust? Trunk rim and floorboards, I can live with that! Complete car except for one piece of chrome and one missing taillight... Can you tell me this? This car is "post" model, I see some restored with no post, is this a modification or factory?
if it has a post it is a sedan---not a hardtop---there are several dimensional differences between the two ...
apacheben, your Biscayne is not ugly don't give her a complex! black 62 are you sayin that Ben's Chevy would look better on blocks? Update, just for kicks I put a good carb, new gas and sparkplugs in my Bel Air today and she ran like a top! open pipes... but she may have been better off with a knocking rod or burnt valve. Would have gotten a new engine alot sooner. BTW any recomendations on what Brakes to put on the new ride?
Nice Car, saw it down at A.S.S. for the garage crawl during the roundup. I remember someone raising hell about it being in the way or something Heres my contribution to this thread .. Sold it about a year ago, sucker had a 454
Thanks! Yeah, I guess my car was the one that set him over the edge. Understandable though, the guy was trying to run a business and had no where to park.. A few more pics: I hope nobody's eyes start bleeding from the late model in the foreground.
