I'm looking at picking up a long-roof falcon but before I go to take a look at it (it's a few hours drive away) I wanna educate myself, is it a unibody? I know the front suspension is different, would I still be able to do a granada disc brake swap? are there any places it's prone to rust? Is there anywhere I could read up on it? I'd love to pick the car up for the wife to drive around but I need to know I'm not getting in over my head. Sounds like a good deal but I've been let down before you live and you learn. Thanks everyone! Kerry
Yes they are a unibody, so make sure rust is not too bad. The front suspension share similarities with all Falcons and Mustangs, plus Mavericks and Granadas too. To do the granada deal, you would need to changeout the upper and lower arms to '63 and later stuff or Mustang to fit the spindles. Or you could go with Scarebird disc brake conversions as I have done with my girls car. Look for rust ion the floor pans, and rocker panels. Floor rust is just a pain in the ass and fixable, rockers get into the be careful range. There are several good threads going here, so just search Falcon. fordsix.com is a great resource as well.
Or you could step up and put in one of the new TCI kits and get new disc brakes and rack steering.. makes it handle like a new car..
Sorry to hijack the post, but wow--I drove a '63 Sprint for 12 years with the original front suspension, drum brakes and power steering. I would LOVE to see what one of these handles like, when it handles and stops like a new car. To the guy who's getting the wagon: yes, please look for rust in the floors, the doors, the quarter panels, the tailgate, basically everywhere including the roof--and look at condition too. Make sure it's not all beat to hell. They're great cars, and if you do get it, don't feel like you have to do everything all at once.
These cars are pretty simple and share alot of the mechanical features of a Mustang. Wagons are prone to rust on the roof rails at the back because the drain plugs get clogged. The wagons also rust under the rear seat and under the mat on the back shelf be sure and check under the mat. They make great cars to drive.
Wow! Thanks everyone, I was actually regretfully informed last night that the car had sold so the search continues, I've always been a big fan of the early 60's ford galaxie, falcon and fairlanes so I'm not giving up haha that is all really good info though and I'll use it all for the next car I find, thanks a lot!
