We cruised it to Vegas, goin like 80-90 mph all the way, no firewall, no floor. Accelerator mounted on the left head. It was hot as hell for sure....greasy, dirty but very happy!!
..Yeah it wasnt a real fast Truck, I knew the engine was stock. But man I loved scaring the Hell outta my neighboors and basically everyone in Fremont,Ca..lol
Haha, yeah that's what it was good for. Great attention getter. I remember goin down Beach Blvd in Huntington Beach, the cops rolling up by the side, and giving us the thumbs up and laughning!!
Glad you guys had fun with it, and I hate to burst your bubble, but any "old timer" that thought it was the real deal had too much window pane acid BITD.....(Christ I hate that saying).
I remember seeing it on ebay not too long ago, whoever had it tried saying that it was a race truck since new.
When I first Sold that Truck, I actually did a trade for a 67 Falcon with a stroker engine in it.The kid lived with his parents and a week later called me up and said he had to sell the truck right away, so I bought it back for pennies on the dollar. My Wife was mortified when she came home to see the truck in the driveway once again...lol
I remember watching it on E-bay a few times, but I decided to build my own instead...haha...it was always turning up for years, it seemed. I always laughed at the "A gas" designation...yeah, right! But, I liked it's rawness, though, and it's contrast, ...it seemed like something some poor farmers might have built to beat cars with, with Leatherface standing in the back,of course, screaming with a chainsaw... Haul a lot of corpses...fast. Of course, I have an imagination, and a sense of humor, so... I remember when it re-appeared on here with it's claim of a "pedigree"...I can't imagine any old-timers buying it as authentic, though. My father built a LOT of fast trucks... I wanted a shortbed anyway, it seemed more "likely" as a drag truck...This truck was totally the inspiration for mine...I knew instantly I wanted to try to go fast in a brick, asap...Haha... And anybody who's anybody knows nobody ever raced trucks... ( read with sarcasm...) Long live the drag truck.... Of course, my motor isn't stock.
In the 60's there was **** Boytons 426 Max Wedge Powered 63 Dodge D100 B/FX Truck that was featured in "HOT ROD" magazine. here's a video: I always Dug the Hell outta this thing!
Us "old timers" aren't disputing there were trucks in drag racing. Your old truck just doesn't p*** the eyeball test.
Ford built some factory backed 427 powered FX trucks too, but they were quickly retired because they weren't compe***ive in the cl***. And winning races was what it was all about, right? As far as g***ers go, there were quite a few 33-40 Willys pickup g***ers. Late models not so much and there were rules to the cl***, which I don't think the 60 would meet. Especially without a firewall in it. Larry T
Yeah well, whatever the case might be, fact still remains that several "old timers" came up to us, and they SWORE they had seen it racing in the 60's. One man even stated that he knew personally "Bad Bob Jenkins" , wich was a name we made up. Hilarious, we gotta lotta great laughs out of this truck. Redneck? YES Fun? YES Cheap? YES
Funny ****! It was Fun and that's all that matters..There were a few haters, I overheard a few "What a Pile" comments, whatever. It wasnt for everyone..
A '57 to '60 F series truck would have been acceptable in the Gas cl***es. Compe***ive?...well, that's another argument. I planned mine out to meet ALL C Gas criteria, for the later 60's, including engine setback, crankshaft center line height, suspension, interior and body. Power/weight ratio would have put it in C Gas.... If I recall correctly ( I started building it 5 years ago, so, I don't recall all the exact specs, off hand, without a look at the rules. ) this particular cl***, around this time, was running around about the 11 second mark, and into the high tens. We have a mild motor, and though it is not period correct ( 460 Ford ) it is now hidden under the requisite hood that the cl*** would have had....The truck should run right around that mark, and could have easily done so with an FE, or an injected Chevy, or whatever, at the time, as it is a very mild, simple motor, with no fancy parts. It only lacks ( for now...until I get to them!) headlights and another seat, to be, as per the rules, legal. Another member on here actually ran an earlier model , like a '55 or '56...in Western Canada in this cl***, I believe, around this era. Not sure if it was too compe***ive. A '57 ran at Lions, in AWB cl***es, around this same time, with a 427. And Jack Whitby's Ford in B/FX. Not everyone was a winner, anyway...history tends to only remembers the winners, not necessarily the clever, the innovators, the strange and out-of-step, or anyone else along the line, who falls out of compe***ion, and through the cracks, for any number of other reasons. To look at them re-created now, some might think the entirety of the 60's consisted of '55 Chevy's pairing up against '40 Willy's...I LOVE both of these cars, but, geeez...there was a WHOLE LOT MORE diversity present at the actual time, then now, in our re-creations. I think a lot of fans must have only occupied their seats for the top bills..., much as today As far me, I like the underdog....always have. Why be nermal...
Lemme guess, Goldchainers who bought their cars instead of building them & don't even know how to change the oil.
Most likely I'm sure.I try to get along with everyone though.Diversity is a good thing in Hot Rodding in my opinion.
I agree with you and I also understand that not everyone who likes hot rods/ kustoms etc has the skill to build one. No heartburn at all there. Its just the people who didn't/can't build their cars and really know nothing but are quick to make negative comments who piss me off. I happen to like this truck and the "In your face" at***ude it has. It musta been a blast to drive.
You know what, as long as everyone likes what they're doing and are having fun. That's what it's all about, right?
thats it! Hank I'll be spending quite a bit of time in your neck of the woods this coming month at Serets shop working on the 34..should stop by sometime..
Or maybe old racers that knew every nut and bolt on their cars and what it really takes to run them. Larry T
Just cuz a cat's old doesn't mean he knows anything about old cars, racing or the who deal. I was talking to this graybeard at a show once and he was going on and on about all the cool cars he had in high school in the 40's. Some of his stuff didn't make any sense (well most of it really) but i listened and nodded showing respect to my elders. After he got done I looked at my buddy and kind of rolled my eyes. Well, an older woman walked up and said "Don't mind my husband, he's full of ****!" We looked at her with total astonishment and said "excuse me?" She said, "Look, he was a total nerd in school and drove a funky old 4 door. He never had a cool car until a couple of years ago and is living vicariously through the real Hot Rodders at his high School. Thanks for letting him ramble, but he really doesn't know anything". We smiled and thanked her. Maybe he was one of the guys that "Knew" that truck
Aside from the missing floor and firewall, I've always kinda liked that truck. Something different for sure.
I did sOme big burnouts in the shop parking lot with that truck Still remember you crazy sweedes changing the trans on the side of the parking deck That was a long time ago Fun I mIght have met Martin through you guys Really loved the old chopped 34 pu
