i bought a 60 ford f100 with the 223 inline 6 and have been driving it around town. i replaced the oil, plug and fuel pump. it seemed a bit noisy so i dropped it off to have the oil pressure checked. mechanic told me it was single digits. not sure if the PO used thicker oil and my 10w-30 wasn't up to par. i decided to order a new oil pump and install it and clean out the pan while i'm at it. my question is: how much trouble am i looking at here to drop the pan? from what i can tell i should be able to raise the truck, remove the tires so the front axle is as low as it can go and unbolt the pan? a couple of guys i know made it sound like i have to raise the motor to get the pan to clear everything. i think they are wrong but thought i would verify with some of you guys before i tear into it this weekend. also what oil weight would be best for this? thanks!
My 223 rattled a bit in my '60 when I was first driving it, so I ran 20w50 in it, which helped...of course I live in the Central Valley, CA which is generally warmer than Tennessee... If I remember correctly the oil pan can be dropped as you think, without lifting the engine. BRT
Those sixes probably didn't have much oil pressure to begin with. Run it until it drops then put a V8 in it.
i'm using 20w50 and no sounds. i used 10w40 before but switched to 20w50. runs fine with it. originally called for straight 20 or 30. just use 20w50 or 15w40 and you should be good.
I ran 10W-40 in my 60. Had an oil pressure guage in it. The pressure would get so low at a warm idle that the idiot light would start to glow just a little. I think 10 lbs. if I remember right. Never had a problem with it. Put 60,000 miles on it like that.
First off, you should have no trouble dropping the pan. When you get it back together you should go with 20w-50. Also take the valve cover off and pinch the drain tube on the rocker shaft, this will give you more pressure. (make sure it is the overflow tube you pinch not the feed line) When you have the pan off you might pop a couple of rod and main caps to see what the crank and bearings look like. Might be a wore out POS.
the PO's dad drove it daily 10 minutes to work while they were working on his usual daily driver. i know if a fuel pump goes bad then the car vehicle will still run, just shitty and gas will leak out all over the place. still works, just a bad part. i assume the oil pump is the same way? if it is just gummed up but still works, i replace it and it should take care of the low pressure problem. that is the only reason i wanted to replace it. would it better to run a cleaner or something through it and drain it to see if that helps loosen any gunk in the motor?
fuel pump on mine went out. took for ever to start, and when it did it only ran for 2-3min. then took 5 more minutes to start again. changed fuel pumps and starts and runs fine now.
I had the same problem with my 223, pan came out fine, getting it back in without disturbing the gasket was fun. Pressure really wasn't much better with the new pump. I eventually dropped a V8 in it.
