I forget the year but, I recall reading an article in SRM that Maverick rears were almost a direct bolt in. Still to wide. For instance, a 49-51 Merc rear is 61 1/4 in. total from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.
I am running an 8.8 out of an explorer. I used two short side axles to narrow it. It ends up being 56.625 wide. The original is 57
So what's the Shoebox rear axle width? About 56" drum flange to drum flange? Strikes me that a wheel with an additional 2" backspacing over the stock wheels may do it. We used to stick 8.20-x15 (Caddy) tires in the stock wheel wells on Shoeboxes, but it was a tight fit. Almost always the drivers side was close and it would rub on a hard left turn. Cured by cutting part of the fender opening flange into segments and bending it up parallel to the quarter panel skin for an additional 1/2" - 1" clearance. I understand the 57 1/2" wide 9" rears fit pretty well.
