Great thread. I am listening to the route 66 killers right now. Kind of a Dick Dale vibe.

This thread definitely got me pumped up to check out some of the bands people were recommending. A buddy of mine told me about a cool archive of live shows, for all sorts of music. So I hit www.archive.org Once there, you can search on any key words, and narrow your search to "live music archive". Download the zipped MP3 archive of the show you want and then crank it. I found a bunch of Mermen shows and a number of others. But the one surf show that blew me away was a group from Tokyo, Japan called "The Surf Coasters". The show was recorded live at the Double Down in Vegas last year. I would have to categorize the guitar player as a virtuoso of the genre... blazingly fast, yet super-clean and melodic. The drummer and bass player are on the same skill level, so there are no weak links in the trio. They play originals and covers, including: Miserlou, Rumble, Summertime Blues, and a whacked version of Flight of the Bumblebee. Check out the show and you'll see what I mean.

One of the best of the 90's surf revival was The Fathoms, from Boston. They put out two absolutely KILLER discs on the MuSick label, if you didn't know better you'd think they were a forgotten band from 1963.

Also seek out a copy of Dan Forte's alter ego Teisco Del Ray's "The Many Moods of Teisco Del Ray". Great stuff!

I found a couple of horazontal striped t-shirts like those at Ross not long ago. One red and white, one light blue and white. Just like the 1965 Hobie Skateboard Team.

    Ahhh, me too. hehe

For a more relaxed, mood music type surf deal, try "The Friends of Dean Martinez", they have a western type of sound that's pretty cool. They do a take on Glen Campbell's "Witchita Lineman" that's really awesome.

Another band that is on the trippy, not too traditional side of surf is the "Mermen" and, yeah, "Pollo Del Mar".

  19. I'll just add a little more. Seems Japanese bands have been left out of this conversation. Instro-surf was huge in Japan in the 60's. If you find any "Group Sounds" or "GS" comps, those are great. As of late, some great Japanese surf bands are:

    Jackie and The Cedrics
    The Surf Coasters
    Mach Kung Fu
    Mad 3
    Royal Fingers

And here are some American bands that I didn't see listed:

    Atomic 7
    Huevos Rancheros
    Ramblin Ambassadors
    Huntington Cads
    Impala
Chrimson Ghosts (Instro Misfits cover band)
Eddie Angel (Lead guitarist from Los Straightjackets)
    Nebulas
    Phantom Surfers
    Tiki Men

And for your viewing pleasure: The Ventures in Japan, 1966. Gretsch drums, Mosrite guitars, 15" Lansings. PFR!

Take note of the stage arrangement too.

Bumble Bee Twist (and you thought it was Deke's??) :)

Ventures still tour Japan most of the year. When I discovered this about 8 years ago I did'nt understand why they were there so much. After doing more research I found an article that stated that during the 60's the Ventures outsold the Beatles in record sales in Japan 3 to 1.

Now I no why they still tour there.
