'60's Chevy parts interchange help needed

so I was out in the garage polishing the coupe's firewall

 

it started looking pretty good

 

and i noticed that I still had the temporary rubber bushing at the bottom of my collumn

so I pulled it out

 

I took the collumn to the local old car parts store

they couldn't help me and sent me to

the local cl***ic car parts dealer

who couldn't help me and sent me to

the local muscle car parts guys

who at least identified my collumn for me.

turns out my $25.00 keyless shiftless tilt is out of

a '67 Camaro of all things

My question is;

what other collumns shared the same plastic bushing and metal clip

that goes at the bottom of the collumn and where can I get one??

or should I just ebay this damn thing and grab something a little less

hoity ****in toity??

I think I'd make my next stop at the chevy dealer. I'll betcha that bushing interchanges for a few years and the parts guy should be able to fix ya up.....maybe.

 

Rocky is right-but I bet fullsize GM columns are the same for a few years- probably 1965 to maybe 70 or 72. At least Pontiac ,Olds, Chev, or Buick. Camaro tilt columns are worth about 10 times what you paid for it. That polish job is the "cat's ***"!! overspray

I just got back from the dealer

I bought the only one available,

fits '69 thru '75 tilts

unfortunately I was unable to make it fit mine.

but I think I have a solution, at least temporarily

a pvc coupling has the exact outside and inside dimensions

to center the bearing in the collumn jacket.

this is all the original was doing.

I hacked it just beyond the inside shoulder and sanded it right up to the shoulder

 

pushed the bearing in up to the shoulder

it's a snug fit

 

then pushed the whole thing in the collumn,

also a snug fit,

put the spring and ring clip on

 

I'll put a screw in it to make sure it stays put,

but this should work till I find the correct part.

try looking at 68-69 Novas. cant remember if they had the key on the column or not, but that generation Novas ganked from the first-gen Camaro parts bin all the time.

I'd try NAPA. I'm out today anyway so I'll drop by the local and get them to look it up for me.
'67 is no longer a dealer part so you should be able to get a bushing from anyone that knows how to use the Book instead of the computer that only goes back about 10 years or so.

I will keep up the hunt too,

my temp bushing will be plenty good to get it all back together

but I don't want to leave it in there permanantly..

I expect to be doing better than a hunnert per in just over a month

and it's gotta be right,

if ya know what i mean

'60s I understand completely. Somehow the wind just has a taste @ 100+.

paul that col. looks identical to the caddy tilt tele's that i run.. I cant believe that they had diff diameters.. but who knows..

I bet NAPA should have one...

see if you can make sense of this sketch

the shaded part is the plastic bushing I made,

it centers the ball bearing that centers the shaft in the inner and outer housings.

this is basically all the original plastic retainer did.

if I use a generic bearing to take the place of the bushing and bearing it needs to fit the shaft and outer housing but I still need to center the inner housing.

maybe with another bushing between the two housings..

I think I should still try to find the original plastic retainer.

I will look at all late sixties GM columns.

it may end up being a junkyard item.
