It's all close. My understanding is that swapping later stock for earlier will work. There may be a little TLC required, especially since the NOS lid is perfect.

So, I don't know what it needs yet. I've yet to put any time in the shop due to work and family so all of it is still in my head. Having it just sit there, I can tell the lip for the rumble will need to be hammered back a bit. Just doing that may make it all work. We'll see.

I'm pretty sure the only difference between a 28-9 and 30-1 lid is the rumble lid latch mounting area. The 28-9 latch mounts to the top causing that bump to slightly hit the lip of the trunk gutter of a 30-31 body. The 28-9 body has a slight recess in the gutter to allow it to clear. The easiest thing to do is rework the 30-1 body gutter to clear the latch mount area.
Unless someone else can post up some pics of the differences, I will try to take some pics in the next few days for you.

Here's what the 28-9 cutout area on the upper trunk gutter lip looks like. Should be pretty easy to modify your 30-1 to look the same.

I used to get overwhelmed when starting a big job because I looked at the whole job. My employer (Marc), who was one of the smartest dudes I ever knew and / or worked for. He was the only employer that had a Christmas party for the employee's and he was Jewish..

None at the moment. I've taken on another job to keep my business going because I refuse to let it get wiped out. My hot rod fund side hustle has dwindled with the current economic fears and/or reality but I suspect the holidays could help rebuild that fund a bit

There is a bunch of stuff that could be done by spending an hour or two in the shop every week but I've been 100% dedicated to work, family, and keeping healthy.

This coupe is a good reflection of my refusal to quit... haha.

I've really cleaned out a lot of BS in my life to not only simplify but to keep the important stuff in focus.

A lot of stress was created by putting too much unnecessary stuff on my plate. I'm over that, now. While I still have a lot on my plate, I think it's more normal of a "full life" not a chaotic mental mess.

The coupe will get done. By then I may have to brew my own fuel...haha.

I love the story of that coupe, as well. So cool that it was a built by family and buddies.

I see that I'm not the only one that's trying to keep your spirits up! What some of us do to build one of our dream cars is still a hobby and the other parts of our life sometimes interrupts the process. When you try to do too much, many things remain undone, so priorities must be established. Seems as though you are ahead of the curve on this, finish up and come on back. We'll be here!!

Both these coupes are in my inspiration folder!

I appreciate the super kind words, truly.

I'm not down and out or depressed or anything. Truthfully, I am just busy. Up at 4:30am and the days are full until 9pm or so. I'd rather suffer a bit now so I don't have to later.

I miss tinkering away and obsessing over certain details but once in a while I sneak out there and sit in it and daydream.

None of y'all need to worry unless a for sale ad pops up!

Hey Brent, when misc. **** happens, I always think of this quote by Joe Walsh.
You know, there’s a philosopher who says, “As you live your life, it appears to be anarchy and chaos, and random events, non-related events, smashing into each other and causing this situation or that situation, and then, this happens, and it’s overwhelming, and it just looks like....what in the world is going on? And later, when you look back at it, it looks like a finely crafted novel. But at the time it don't."
I think Joe was that philosopher.;) Positive thoughts man.

    Hey gents!

No progress to speak of on the coupe but I did want to share a minor 4 year parts-hunting victory. I've been on the hunt for a replacement 63-65 Corvette trap door oil pain for my 327 and they're not easy to find in great condition and when you do find a decent one - they're expensive. My current one is pretty beat up.

However, an NOS one popped up and though it wasn't cheap, it was a far better deal than what others have been asking for used ones. I figured, "when am I going to see another NOS pan again?" Likely not soon.

This pan was one of those things I didn't need but as a nerd for details, it's something I wanted.

A photo from the seller, showing the inside:

    That's all for now.

Always good to finally find a missing part. Just so we know the larger sump is what we are looking for on those oil pans?

    Yaaay @-Brent- !
Those subtle touches & parts that can't be ordered from 1-800-Summit are what make trad hot rodding so rewarding.

Though it takes a LOT longer.

I have one from my other oil pan and the proper windage tray, too. The other pan was pretty beat.

This superb thread had me since day-before-yesterday.
The many avenues you covered were like a journal of MY life!
    Great going, Brent.
I nearly lost the sight of my left eye from an aluminum chip. (1979) Cost me my '40 Merc, and eyeball injections.
My 2015 eyesight has decreased to 2020, and I'm 80.
Thinking my '27 tub would better serve me if it was a draggin' 'A' Coupe! Onward I march...:D

Same here! I was watching this thread closely, the way Brent goes about it is thorough, but then it gets fast.
I was hoping to hear it fire any time now... But waiting for this-and-that can be brutal!
Just ask anybody around A****er. I sometimes travel to Modesto, or beyond. (Generally, about 60 miles, also 60 miles South to Fresno)
Thanks to the gods of China Stock there is also Amazon!
Brent is way onto the 'waiting game', not everybody stops and makes brackets, re-does woodwork, or repairs sheet metal flaws.
    Methinks we are all anxious...

I love purpose built hot rods. I love everything that looks like a vintage drag car.

  28. It's just after midnight, finishing up this ENTIRE build thread... What got me hooked was to see a *****'n '31 Model A drag coupe that looked like Hartman's Model A drag coupe build on here years ago!

Subscribed and anxious (like the rest of us Hambers) to see this AWESOME coupe finished and fired up for street duty/drags at the track - GREAT JOB Brent!!

    Thanks, Mike!

I knew you were digging into the thread when a bunch of notifications popped up, same thing with @A****er Mike earlier this week.

I truly appreciate you all taking the time.

I am going to start making some progress soon. The dash fabrication is going to get finished and I am going to fab the mounts for the fuse block. The decklid fabrication needs to be done and I'm going to get back on knocking out dings and dents and such.

Two Steps Closer: Crowding up a 36 Dash

I love the bezels in 55 Chevies and I always pictured this dash with them.

55-56 Chevy Switches in 36 ord Dash .jpg

    GM style ignition switch .jpg

I didn't get scientific and measure or anything, I just placed the bezel where it felt right, spaced it with my pointer finger and popped a punch mark.

Of course, I did my usual fitment and got all exact with the holes and filed in that little keyway for the light switch.

    Light Switch Hole.jpg

    1955-56 Chevy Switches in 36 ord Dash.jpg

Unfortunately, the Union Pacific Chevy truck pull shaft doesn't fit the universal American Autowire switch, so I chopped it just to see what it would look like and mocked it in.

    Gm style light switch.jpg

It's been a long time since I've messed with the car but it felt great. It's weird, if I skip a day of exercise, I feel off. The moment I walk into the gym, I feel better even before the workout.

It was kind-of the same way, today. Glad to be back on it.
