60's Impala

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Shawn F., Jul 29, 2009.

  1. I understand this is a pre 64 site but I see late 60's stuff all the time so I don't see this being a problem here I hope...
Anyways, I am looking to sell my current daily driver and buy something with lower miles, A/C, and something with more room. While looking around online I found this: http://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/1292342844.html
I called the guy today and he is only 30 minutes from me. I plan to check it out on Sunday. He doesn't really know anything about the car besides that it has the original 40,000 mile inline 6 motor and Powerglide. He doesn't even know if it's power brakes, steering or factory A/C (not sure if it was his families car that he just got and never bothered to look at or selling it for a friend or what). If it turns out that it looks as good as I think it does in the picture, has power brakes, steering and factory A/C I may buy it.
It's a 4 door of course but I don't mind. It's easier for me to take friends around, throw all my fire gear in the back, throw some materials and tools in the trunk and back seat, etc. What do you guys think?
Any idea if most of these 4 doors with the 6 cylinder were mostly all manual cars or mostly power accessories, etc?

Thanks a lot for any info!

I learned to drive in one of those!
It's pretty cool, but 3K is a lot for a 4 door with a 6. Most of them came with a 283 and powerglide, PS and maybe PB.
Many years ago I saw a 4 door with a 396, 4 speed, and bench seat all factory. It was very unusual and cool to see. Anyway, at that price its gotta be exactly what you want.

Chances of a 6cyl Chevrolet, Impala or not, having power steering, brakes, or factory A/C are pretty slim.

  4. It's been on Craigslist for a few weeks and this is his second time posting. I would offer him $2500 if I do want to buy it but I doubt it. It's not something I NEED to have or really want. I just saw that it was a solid car with low miles and thought I'd look into it. I'm not in any kind of hurry at all. If it has Power steering and brakes and discs up front then I will see about getting it for $2500 or so. If not then I am going to pass. Most likely like you mentioned, since it has a 6 cylinder it probably doesn't have any options as far as power and A/C goes.
Thanks for the opinions and suggestions!

  5. It probably has power steering, doubtful on power brakes. Any AC I've seen in one of those was after market.

If the frame is not rusty and the floor pans are good, snap it up. Look for rust in the side frame rails and the rearward of the back kick towards the rear bumper. Some went where the front clip meets the side rails.

With the 6 and PG, it should run great around town but may be a tad anemic on the on-ramps on the highway. I've dropped a 396 in many of those "grandma" cars, they make the ultimate sleepers.

I can save you a trip then, because if its all original it will not have disc brakes.

Disc brakes weren't available until 67 I think.
