I've been kicking around the idea of putting some 60's style nerf bars on my full fendered deuce sedan. I don't want the vertical "s" bar style. What I want is the longer horizontal style ....maybe with the license plate enclosed around the one in the rear. I have'nt been able to find too many pics of the 60's style bars used on the old hot rods.

Can anyone here design me a front and rear 60's style design or give me a few more ideas to work with?? Any help would be much appreciated.

I guess we'll probably use 5/8 or 3/4 round stock for the bars, heat and bend them and then make mounting brackets. Make sure everything fits and is straight, then have them chrome plated.

How 'bout it gents and ladies...any cool ideas I can use.

How about simple vertical nerfs, my friend DJ was thinking about nerfs for his 34 a while back, and I made this in paint.

Those are pretty cool but I was thinking more along the lines of the horizontal ones about 4 foot long and maybe 4-5 inches high. Thanks for the pic.

  4. I really like this bar, am going to do something similar on the back of my car.

Hey Sammy. How are you and your Dad doing?? Do you have any pics of the ones on that pick-up? Sounds like what I'm looking for. If you got any ideas let me have 'em.

Didn't one of the rod/custom style mags do an article about these in the past month or three?

Andy, Good to hear from you. It seems like years since we've heard from you. Your idea and mine on nerf bars are the same. I really like the ones on the green A 2dr. I've been playing around with ideas for my '34 pickup and those are almost exactly what I want. I'm trying to duplicate (or come close) to a '34 pickup that was driven to highschool by a guy about two years older than me. It's just one of those hot rods that made an early impression. I've had a '34 pu since the late 60's and it hasn't been driven for years. If I ever get around to doing it again this one of the things I'd like to have on it.

I'm too lazy to look for pics, but I think there's a lot of stuff like that on some of the Ed Roth cars. No better place to look for inspiration than the works of a genius.

From the April '59 Hot Rod. They used 7/8 and 1" tubing.

Thanks Mutt, for the tubing size and the pic. Getting some great ideas from you guys...thanks.

  24. What is the best way to go about bending the radius on the ends into 1" pipe or tube? Could you do it with at torch and something bend it around or do you need some kind of bender?

  25. I believe the lastest Street Rodder Mag has what you are looking for...

I'll double check when I get to the house...

    I'd scan it, but I don't have a scanner...

  26. Thanks, let me know. I wonder if and exhaust shop can bend it?

  27. Anyone else have any imput on how to do this?

  28. Tim, weld a pipe stub to the table with the radius you want, weld the tube or solid stock to the stub, heat and work the stock around the stub until you get the 180 degree bend you are looking for. Packing it with dry sand helps hold the shape as well. av8 did a post on that technique.

I scrounged some 3/4" solid stainless round stock that looks plenty stout,
should bend easy with enough heat,
weld and polish with no chrome would look good too.

I do my own polishing so S.S. would be cheaper probably than having them chrome plated. Chrome is starting to get REAL expensive!!
