Hey all! Im having an issue with the power steering shuddering on my 61 Galaxie...mostly when the wheels are moving to the left. The system worked great up until a month ago when the PS Valve started to just dump fluid everywhere. I bought a new valve and replaced it and no more leaks, but it keeps shuddering like crazy. Its hard to see it in the video if you look at the wheel itself, but look at the linkage and how much it shakes. It makes the entire car shake when driving and turning. Questions is...do I just have stubborn air in the system or is it a bad valve or maybe the pump is going? If I let it sit for a day then start it up the reservoir gets super frothy so it makes me think air is either in the system or getting into the system somehow. Any Ford experts can help point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
I had a similar issue once upon a time. It turned out to be trapped air in the system and as well as I remember it worked itself out after a bit. jack the front wheels off the ground, start the engine and sit in the car turning the wheel lock to lock. Make sure fluid stays topped off. Should work itself out.
Get a helper and watch the fluid level when turning lock to lock. I had this same problem a while back, and the fluid level would drop drastically when turned all the way either way. That is when you want to add fluid, to get the trapped air out.
When working in the local Ford dealership 3-4 years back, the Ford Falcon power steer had a similar problem (especially if the front wheels were turned L to R while the engine wasn't running) The cure (then) was to turn the steering wheel full left to full right lock a few times, with the engine at 2.5 to 3000 revs, turn off the engine, and let it sit for a couple of hours.
