The '64 Impala column shift console is a rare part! Here's the one I have. In leu of a shifter hole, a small storage compartment was included. Cool.

Never seen a 64 unit like that, have seen a 66 Impala console like that. One of those real oddities that makes you scratch your head.

Another one of those "they never did that" kind of deals but they did.
GM felt the need to pasify people that wanted what they wanted (or didn't).
I never could understand why someone would want a Super Sport Nova for instance but just wouldn't squeeze the extra $37 bucks out of their wallet for the optional four speed or automatic, creating an oddball SS with a column shift three speed with bucket seats and no console, never saw one though with a console with that odd filler/cover.
The real weird one is when someone ordered the 327/350 hp engine option but kept the standard issue three speed on the column (automatics were not available with the L79).

Well some buyers just wanted all the emblems and nicer interior pieces, but not the performance. I mean with the Impala, Nova's and the 64/65 Chevelle's, you could get I6's in a Super Sport car. Was talking to CJ today about that oddball console and he just thinks some old timer wanted a car to look young but was just fine comfortably with a 3 on the tree like all the other cars he had probably owned.
