How can I tell if a 62 Galaxie is an original 406 car? How can I tell if the motor is 406 and or original to car? Thanks!
Someone here can no doubt decipher the numbers for you but if you don't get an answer you can always give the vin to your insurance agent. They can tell you everything about the car from the vin.
The fifth digit in the VIN# would be a B or G. B for a 406 4bbl and G for a 406 6bbl or tri-power. As for the correct motor it will have a casting # like C2AE-6015-J It might have a -K or -V.
The only way to ever know for sure with FE's is to measure the bore and stroke (406 - 4.13 x 3.78). The VIN #'s and casting #'s are a good place to start, but FE's are very interchangeable and the car has been around for 50 yrs. Some past owner good very easily have modified or swapped the motor. Good Luck.
$8,000 sound about right for a 10 year old restoration showing paint wear G code 2dr ht? Car was used not museum car.
Only thing that would make it sweeter is if its an original 4 speed car. I'm just a sap for the early 60s full size 4 speed cars. Catalina's, Biscaynes, Fords and Mopars. Maybe because thats what I grew up with. Pat
When I need a set of pistons I found them through the So Cal Speed Shop in the Los Angeles area. Not cheap but certainly the correct items and new pins fitted already. Normbc9
G code would be 6V (tri-power to GM guys) 406's were all solid lifter 4speed cars. If it's real I sure hope the T-10 is in it.
some things to look for other than what has been mentioned above. ...406 cars had larger brakes, think 1/2 in. wider, larger diameter fuel line than conventional galaxie, and 1 more leaf in the rear springs with more wrappings around the springs.
Keep us FORD guys posted. We want you to get it and show pics.I thought that I had found a 63 406 car this summer. My neighbor has had it since 65 and it has the 406 emblems and tri power but it was a 390 3spd on the tree. Sitting outside under a boat tarp for 10 years now and going down hill fast. He wants about what your guy wants for his car too!
Tommy If I get it I'll have 10,000 questions about it here! LOL I've e-mailed the guy for more info but no reply yet ajnd it may be monday before I get back from race at No Problem to check my e-mail.
Do it Judd, you just about got the Comet ****oned up, your gonna get board. By the way nice G codes go for triple that around here.
Judd;you NEED that Galaxy!!!! It will give you a cl***ic to drive when the Comet is being prepped for the next race!! ROY.
If the '62 is a -G- code, or -B- code(4v 406) there's a few distinct items to look for: As mentioned the HP Galaxies had the larger 3" wagon brakes up front, but unique to a '60 HP352,'61 HP390, '62-'63 406 and 427 car is a 3/8" fuel line; the starter cable from solenoid to starter should run along the right inner fender panel to the firewall then down to the starter (this was to clear the cast iron header style exhaust manifolds) and one of the most unique features used on these HP Galaxies starting in '61 was the brake line that crosses over from the junction on the left side will run forward and then across over the front frame rail just under-behind the radiator and then back to the right front wheel cylinder. This was to protect the line in case of severe engine failure-damage.
If it's unmodified it would also be manual steering and brakes, no power with the 406, even an XL like mine
Y,all keep ya fingers crossed ya here! He replied to my e-mail said it is real car with 4 speed and will send pictures tomorrow.
Early 60s HI-PO Fords also had stops on the back side of the lower A-frames to prevent the 15inch Hi Po Kelsey-Hayes wheels from hitting at full turn. Incidentally, if it does happen to have the original Kelsey-Hayes Hi-Po wheels, they are worth a good buck. A set of five in good condition could be worth $1,500 or more.
The guy sent pics a good bit of bubble rust on the lower door. What is the trans code for a 4speed on the door tag. Thanks!
Don't remember offhand, but if it has the B or G engine code, it's a 406 car, and they only came with manual trans, brakes, and steering
It looks all manual, the rod like a three speed shift on the column threw me but I see all of the 4 speed cars have it.
1962 Galaxie 500 had the shift rod on the column (but no attachment for the handle) the XL did not. Transmission code 5 for a 4 speed. The pictures show a correct shifter and shift knob and it appears to have the correct Kelsey Hayes Hi-Po wheels. I can't see if they have the safety bead or not. Also the brake line was moved because of the cast exhaust headers came too close to the brake line in the original location. I guess if you planned to blow the motor it was a good ideas as well but Ford did not design the car to blow the motor! It looks like a great car for the money. Good luck.
yep the 406 had bigger brake shoes,3/8 fuel line,5 leaf springs, that car looks like the real deal, and 8000 grand is a smoking deal.........
Good looking car, Judd. It would be cl***y next to your Comet, plus I am a little partial to the big Fords, and Mercs. Eric
