I think most 406 and all 427 had cross bolt mains, so there should be bollt heads showing above the oil pan on both sides of the block (but some of the early 406 may not have them) I think.

Only late 406s (1963) had cross-bolt blocks.Early ones (1962) did not. Looks like a fantastic deal from here!
As Fast57F100 stated, it does appear to have the correct Kelsey-Hayes wheels. Although I tend to think most HAMB members are above this, you should close the deal on this car ASAP, because now that you put up pictures of the license plate someone could easily track it down and buy it out from under you. Just sayin'

I think that is well worth $8K. Looks very solid and being a red car makes it even more desirable. Aside from the valve covers it seems very stock and unmolested. Someone will grab this one if you snooze too long I fear. :) They ain't makin' 'em any more.

Like has already been said, for $8K I'd be sittin' outside his house with the trailer waiting for him. Looks like a real nice car from the pics and $8K for a real 406 tri power car in that shape is cheap.

If that thing was within 100 miles of me I'd be there this weekend to buy it even though I'm trying to sell stuff. LOL

Car looks like it has alot of rust issues and previous patch work but still don't sound like a too bad of a deal if it's real but look at it close!

How bad the rust issues are would be my main worry, but I love the 60's fords.
I had a 63 1/2 405 horse 406 4-speed and several Starliners..........thats what I grew up with and it doesn't get any better for a Ford guy surrounded by a bunch of chevy lovers.:D:D
I hope it works out for you.;)

    3spd w/overdrive was the base transmission. I know where there's a '62 406/6V equipped that way.

Well it has all the correct casting numbers on block heads etc 2u63g****** vin number, trans code 5. so I bought it for $6,000. Lots of rust ,lower quarters behind rear wheels, front edge of hood, lower door skins. The interior is perfect other than the dash pad that shouldn't be there. The motor turns over but won't start, setting for ten years. Tires (LOL!!! setting for ten years LOL!!!). I think there is enough extra trim to do another car. Only 3 correct wheels the rears are wider. I was told it was 3.70 posi, ****ter shield with Zoom clutch plus I got the original bell housing. Floor and trunk pans look solid.

Thanks PMed Ya! I plan on keeping it original as I can, maybe ac under the dash I'm in south Mississippi and want to drive it regular and fix it to tow my Comet to the track. I'll start with getting it dependable and safe.

I do have an original Ford underdash unit I'm not too attached to ;)
Wouldn't work too well with the 427 and 5.14's in the 406 car, and the ragtop- well, y'know, what's the point of AC?

$6K............you did REAL good. When done it will be worth a lot more and not your everyday 390 car.

Finally got it off the trailer ( took 4 hours+) rear tag looks like 3.70 Trackloc T10 trans. 1989 tags, set more like 20 than 10 years.

Two more questions. Can I use an old 352 distributor shaft to pre oil the motor before I start it and is the 406 fuel pump the same as a 390? Thanks again!

The 352 distributor shaft should work fine to prime the pump. The fuel pump bolt pattern and lever arm will be the same, I don't know if the rated flow rates will be though. You should be able to use it to get it running though.

Great score by the way. Have fun with that big old Gal.

    Good Luck

Well washed 150lbs of dust off it and put the street tires off the Comet on it to get it rolling. Swapped some valve covers that are closer to what should be on it.

Your new covers are the correct type, except for the chrome. I've heard rumors of chromed "dress up kit" covers, but the only round ones I've ever seen are the 427 "baldie" type with no lettering, that took the 427 flag decals. The round 406 decals are available, usually listed on epay. BTW, there have been debates, but both 406 decals should be to the left on the cover as you look at it, not both to the front of the car- drivers side to the front, p***enger to the rear

Thanks all! I put new tires and rebuilt the rear brakes today, waiting on front break parts, master cylinder and carb rebuild kits. It looks like the carbs are the originals c1ae9510-au + av. can't wait to get it running!! Any body have the wide trim piece for the drivers front fender? I have about 30 extra trim pieces and don't have the only one I need!! LOL.
