I have a bunch of trim from a 500 that got s****ped a while back, send me a pic of the piece you need. If I have it, I need both outer headlight rings- got any?
Gene I need the short piece on the front fender about 3" wide with the white center and stanless edges. I think I have all the headlight rings extra I'll check tomorrow. I'll try a picture but I'm having trouble posting pictures tonight for some reason. It is the wide piece missing from the drivers front fender
Are you missing just the wider piece underneath, or the "arrow" on top too? Pretty sure I have the wide piece, maybe the top- sounds like a good swap. Getting sick of switching headlight rings between the two cars- I'll take a look at what I have. Are the headlight rings in good shape, or dinged up? Got a few, but not enough outers. Here's where they'd go
Gene yes I need the shorter wide piece with the white center. I have two outer headlight rings but they are both rough, they are yours if you want them but the bends and scratches will take a lot of work to fix. I think the Comet need a tow bar!
Should the solid lifter 406 have the rocker oiler drip pan or rail what ever you call the things under the rocker covers?
Yes- and you want to run them, they carry a lot of the oil into the valley instead of the drainback holes, and keep too much from getting on the valve stems
A dealer in Wa. state has a black one with red interior and bucket seats for sale. 406 Tri-power 4 speed, needs some interior work but otherwise it is very cool as is.
Well I have all but the rubber brake line to the rear axle from the floor done and all the fuel line reworked. We spent 4 hours chasing bad grounds corroded points and blocked strainer in the tank and one carb, it is sputtering and trying to start but I have a leak between the axcelerator pump and bowl on the rear carb. I hope it is the pump housing warped as I have extras. The throttle shafts are worn out on all three carbs and I have a reamer and bushings comming be here next week. The wipers, heater blower work, oil pressure light comes on and it looks like it'll be the only vehicle I have with a working gas gauge!
If you wanted to spend some good money having those carbs restored to show quality and correctness, Joe Bunitic in Illinoise is a great guy to have such a thing done. He has been doing the Holleys for all the old Hi-Po Fords at my buddy's shop. Look him up, shouldn't be too hard to find info on him. I bought a restored set of tri-pwr carbs from him a few years ago.
I just happened on this rare one.. Hemmings Motor News Dec issue.62 galaxie 406 G code criise o matic. 1 of 1. With 5 kh wheels....... 1963 Ford Galaxie Registry # 445... So I guess they built at least 1 automatic.. love this thread as I have owned many FE engines.
K9racer that automatic 406 car interesting. Mine has brakes now and I've stopped the fuel leaks. I plan to paint the fuel filter housing and reinstall it then drain all the gas from the tank, add tempoary see through fuel filter in the line at the fuel tank, add new gas and try to start it tomorrow. I don't know if it is charging but every thing else in the electrical system seems to work. I hope a ton of crud doesn't come out of the fuel tank!
Well sputtered but didn't start. I started to put the oil drain pans in the heads and noticed a bent push rod straitened it out enough to do a compression test and found 40 lbs on #6 the rest are from 160 to 180# so I took the heads off and have them at the machine shop. Generator light went out while trying to tow start so it looks to be charging!
Generator pulley is a unique larger diameter...don't lose it! Fuel pump has larger threaded ports to accept the 3/8" fuel line. PM me if you need Joe Bunetic's number.
To late on the generator pulley looks like the p.o. changed it! I'm going back with .020 thicker head gaskets in the hope I can use premium pump gas. I found fuel pump at O'Reillys believe it or not, the manager has been big help tracking down the odd parts. I had to go over to Pascagoula at the NAPA for the brake parts the rear rubber line still isnt 100% correct but works and looks like factory if you don;t know what should be on it. It's killing me my Comet is down also and I have to drive the ugly 92 Dodge truck.
I have a couple 62 G code Galaxies, not trying to hijack your thread but figured maybe I would share a few pics with you...... the Blue car is a base Galaxie not even a 500 and was special ordered with a factory installed lightweight interior and it is 100% original except for the tires as it was parked in a garage back in 1968 with a bad headgasket the heads and intake were removed, sat on the floor next to the car and the whole mess never saw the light of day again until March of this year.... The red one unfortunately had a much worse fate as it was parked out in the field of a local farm back in the 1970s and left for dead until I dragged it out of there this past March also, it is also a G code but its a 500/XL... Good luck with your car , I Know I cant wait to get my blue one on the road...
I have a 1962 Galaxie convertible G code 4-speed for sale. pics are in my album. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=2414
Crump I swapped them for the chrome tbird covers. The guy will sell them, the Ford aluminum highrise 1X4 intake and the big chrome stock style 390 Galaxie air cleaner. He is in Mobile, AL pm me if you want his number.
Cool the field car is the XL version of mine. Does the blue car have the aluminum bumpers, brackets and fibergl*** parts? I couldn't figure out weather Ford had all fibergl*** doors with the kit or just the skins. I hope the fibergl*** is better than the 60's fibergl*** on my Comet! LOL. Hey highjack away like seeing others cars like mine.
Finally got the motor running sweet today new exaust pipes, gas tank. It is drivable but ****** needs rebuilt, I have the parts and will start week after next when the sterio player for my zip drive is in. I replaced the dash voltage regulater, light switch, gas tank sender, temp gauge works now but gas gauge reads empty at 1/2 tank??? I'm going to try good ground and see what that does. replaced heater core and adjusted cables to get flappers working right. Starting to be a good driver and I'm takeing it to its first cruise in Saturday.
Hard to believe I've had it for four years! I finally started body work and found more rust than I thought was there! Floor pans were perfect except right where the trunk folds behind the back panel repairen that and around gas door on rear panel. Rockers and p***enger side quarter front where good but p***enger rear quarter was gone at bottom (fixed) and all of the driver quarter bottom was gone so new panels are almost done. It's going to need drivers door good Arizona door make more sence than all the work it would take to fix this one. Any way here's some shots of current state. 4/14/15
Chevy guy here with a little story from my past--- I'm not positive on the model year but, about 1971 while still in high school I knew a guy that had an original 62 or 63 Galaxie, 406/tri power/4 speed, guy was a bit of a wild man, pedal down all the time, one day it caught up with him, exploded the clutch and took the back of the block off. As far as I remember he got a correct replacement block (used) probably cheap at the time, what would that bare block be worth today. Those were the days huh!
Heater was optional on all American cars in the early '60s. the only car that would not have had an optional heater would have been a car or a body bought in white.
Judd, a friend of mine owns a restoration shop specializing in big block Galaxies. www.mikescl***iccars.net He could be a valuable resource for you. At one time, he owned a do***ented 62 that had the FIRST 406 installed. It was pretty heavily damaged when the wind & hail hit Barrett-Jackson & Russo a few years ago. I think he rebuilt it & sold it since then.
I just checked his website & the 62-406 I was thinking about is listed in "vehicle restoration" tab. Its black with a red/wht interior.
