I got really tired of having such a roached out interior and decided it was time to freshen it up a little. This also served as a practice run for when I do it for real. Since I am broke I needed to do this on the cheap, so with some inspiration from LowKat's rattle can rebuild I decided to give it a shot. This was the interior when I bought the car, not bad at a glance but it was pretty beat. The original door panels were falling apart so for the last year or so I haven't had anything on there. The molding was originally silver but after 49 years it had faded to a light grey and was flaking off. A quick sand and a blast of rattle can primer, paint and clear and things were looking a lot better. I hung onto the original door panels so I would have templates. For the new panels I used 3/16 hardboard from Lowes. I covered them with some plain black marine vinyl. Total cost for materials was $55 I also made a quick package tray Before Finished Door panels I painted the steering column and the parts of the dash that were light grey. Check out my new Superior 500 wheel I scored off Terd Ferguson. My seats are still beat and I hate the red carpet but for now the inside is a lot better. Definitely a lot of bang for the buck.
Looks good. Can't beat that for the price Some black or grey carpet will really freshen it up someday.
Keep going! Check into it, you wont believe how reasonable carpet is. I bought the pre formed auto carpet for an O.T. car of mine for under 200 bones! WELL worth the $$ and effort!
I can get a black carpet for around $150. I am gonna try a few boxes of black Rit dye and a kiddie pool. If it works cool, if not I'll get a new one. I have heard the rit dye works as long as you are going for a darker color.
I'd pay $150 not to have to do that. Looks good so far, I'm working up plans for the interior of my '63 Skylark. There are pics on here of an Invicta interior that just make me drool.
Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it. Like I said I saw what LowKat has done with his pickup and figured I would give it a shot. I am all about saving money where I can. I will post pics when I dye the carpet, that should be interesting.
I only know one guy that tried a dye job. Know that you need to rent a rug doctor or similar and clean the bejeezus out of the carpet AND the pool or tub needs to be big enough to let the carpet lay pretty flat. Good luck!
How did it turn out? I have access to a rug cleaner and the carpet is two pieces so its not that big. It may fail miserably but its worth a shot.
Ya cant fail miserably if ya dont take the chance. But then, how many heros intended to be cowards, but just ran the wrong way? I think youre doing a good job. I did much the same on an old Suburban that my friend said wouldnt work. Then we did his car.
