Picked up a pretty clean 62 4door comet for my girlfriend a few months ago and trying to get it going. The guy I bought it from put what looks like an Amazonian carb on it. Trying to find a stock 1 barrel to put on it. Where’s a good source or does someone have a rebuildable one?? She’s nagging me to get this thing going
Amazon tells us nothing. There’s good stuff on Amazon. It all depends on where it’s from. I can say this...... It will be some type of an 1100 and make sure it’s Loadomatic compatible. It should have a visible spark valve. Honestly the car sounds like a “pig in a poke sack” meaning you not know what you have. Most old cars are like this. So...... You have to be methodical in getting it to run. Fuel Spark Time...... Fuel starts with the gas cap and ends at the plugs. Spark starts at the battery and ends at the plugs. Time starts at the crank and ends at valve timing. Be methodical and go down the list. Otherwise it’s real easy to chase your tail. There may be tail chasing involved but it will not be blind. Get the shop manual! Good luck.
Can you go a little deeper on the spark valve? I have seen some stuff pertaining to the vacuum stuff meaning the distributor. Not sure if the car has it. First ford/mercury of this age so it’s all new territory for me. Thanks in advance
You need the shop manual for the car or equivalent. This will tell you what the car was equipped with from the factory. Do the research, order the books. Loadomatic started around 1948. It is a system that uses vacuum only to control spark advance. All Ford engines used this through 1956.From 1957 until the early 70s 6 cylinder engines used LOM distributors and carburetors. They were matched pairs, the carburetor and distributor. Later 1950s and onward LOM carburetors would have a spark valve on the side of the carburetor. It was part of the vacuum system and it looks kind of like a power valve. Get factory literature to find the right carburetor for this Comet.

The photo above shows what the factory calls the spark vacuum control valve. If you notice it’s part of the vacuum system. The little sixes.....144-200 cid used this system until 1970s Duraspark.
Trust me. I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass. But once again I have to ask the question. "What particular carb problems are you having with the replacement unit?" Also find out just what type of distributor the car has. Load-a-Matic or not is going to make a difference.
I agree. He needs to start at square one with a new unknown car. Fuel Spark Time If it’s a small six 144-200. It’s going to be LOM if it has points. The small sixes were LOM until the electronic Duraspark of the 1970s. The big sixes 240-300 could have either. 240s can have LOM while 300s can have a vacuum mechanical unit. The big sixes were never factory installed into the Falcon/Comet platform.
