Heres some pics of my 62 comet that im doing. Its lowered 4 in front and back. The body work is getting close to done and im starting to work on the engine. Looking for 3x1 manifold and header for it. The car will be either white suede or black suede with a red metalflake roof, with red and white t&r interior with white fur. Wide whites with red steelies and chrome lugs!!
Were it mine, I'd paint it gloss white and keep the present wheel and tire combo. The wide whites and red rims belong to a different era. Ed PS- The lowering job makes it look menacing and the shave helps clean it up.
i agree with the other comment, dont go with red wheels and WW. I like the white suede idea. looks good.
another vote for non red steelies. also, when i did my 62 pontiac I only shaved the rear handles. I wished I shaved em all, or left em all on. it looks goofy with just the rear handles done.
[ QUOTE ] black suede with a red metalflake roof, with red and white t&r interior with white fur. Wide whites with red steelies and chrome lugs!! [/ QUOTE ] Cool, it'll look just like everything else at the ratrod show. A visor will complete that look. JH
I'd go with skinny whites and astros, but why dont you try out a different combo than red and black. why not green? or orange? red and black is overused.
That's gonna be a fun little ride. Let us know when you do the motor stuff, I just got a Falcon 6 banger.
Lookin good. Keep at it, man. Use whatever color combo you like, but I agree that the red/black thing is overdone. Moon has a lot of cool hubcaps in 13". AS for the header, I just split a manifold for mine, PM me if you want details on how to do it. Probably won't make as much power as headers, but its a hell of a lot cheaper.....
Im starting to do the motor stuff now. Im not looking for serious power, just something with a little go, i think this motor will give me that. Im starting to strip the front end down and clean it all and paint it. I think im going to go with the white suede paint on my car. I agree on the black and red but i thought it might bring the color of my interior out? Im not sure what im running for wheels? I would like to run something chrome, i would like lancer caps!! Anybody have any 14 inch 4 lug rims so i could runs lancer caps, or any other 14 inch caps??? Thanx guys Nate
Early sixties cars with white wheels always look very "super stock" to me. I vote WW up front (if you must) and WWW cheater slicks in back, set back 289 dual-quads and a toploader! Giddy up! (Although I guess that's more FX than Super Stock)
Panel Paint it. Cream with red or green panels. Put some chrome '64 Comet hubcaps on it. Cream tuck and roll with green or red piping and a flaked steering wheel. Maybe some redlines. It's a 60s car = stick with a '60s theme. I doubt you are going to find decent wheels with the 4 on 4 1/2 pattern, they just aren't really available unless you find some old rally slots or something. Hubcaps are better - '65 and later Fords had the 14" wheels.
Speaking from experience, flat white will have greasy fingerprints all over it. tops of fenders and doors, front of hood and trunk lid, and around the doorhandles.
Looking good. Keep at it man. I'm w/ the other guys on the red wheels w/ wide whites thing. Astros and skinny whites for sure. As far as color: Gloss white would definitely save you a bunch of headaches over white primer. A red metal flake top would be cool as hell w/ the T & R interior. Keep at it.
4T64RD knows what he's talking about...ANY white car is prone to the old fingerprint attack...but FLAT white is just ASKIN' for trouble!! I tried it myself...and you can't wash off or paint over those greasy prints...you gotta sand and re-spray the panel every time!!
Kooli think i might go to gloss white! I think ill run some what wide whites with caps!! Thanks for your input Nate
Hey guys, thanks for the knowledge that flat white is impossible to keep clean. I wouldn't have known that, and I had once considered painting my van flat white. I personally think that a gloss white car is one of the EASIEST colors to keep clean.
Flat black, 60's car, and whitewalls kinda marks a fella as a poser nowdays..... If you still want that look...go ahead. Just understand that some people will likely take you a little less seriously. I didn't care what people said when I put the Fairlane together. I am very happy too. Its exactly what I wanted and I love that car! Do what you like, but be aware of the current trends and how that "marks" you. Nice work so far on that car by the way! Keep it up. I was RIGHT here in your shoes last year at this time. The HAMB rocks...get that car finished and don't sweat being "correct" so much. JT.
Looking good man. I'll jump in with everyone on the idea that it is a '60's car and will look best with some 60's style. Anyway., it's just more fun than flat black and can be a lot more pimpalicious. If you look into what was going on in the 60's there was some really great stuff. I vote for chrome revese steelies and narrow white walls- look at "Customs of the sixties" to see a bunch of cool cars with that combo. Also, the four door thing works better as a "custom" than a "hotrod" so flat black is doubly bad there. Glad to see you have the one with the cool tailights- I hate those cateye ones - they remind me of granny glasses. You can make some great subtle mods to the ones you have with some tunneling and different lenses. Do it now while you have the welder out! My '65 ranchero - which I never seem to get around to photographing, is an old ford color called wimbledon white- which is sort of creamy. with a silver flake top. looks good and not as stark as bright white. Someday i'll post photos I swear- as of now i'm still knee deep in my engine rebuild.
hey i hear you guys about the poser thing and i was trying to avoid that. I definately want metalflake, i think ill go for the gloss white with red flake top!! Not sure about the wheel and tire combo yet. I really like the look of wide whites, i wont do the red steelies, ill put some chrome to brighten her up!! Thanks for all your input guys.. Nate
Nate, I agree with the rest. I have a 60's moredoor also, and I had WWW, I just got rid of them for some 1&1/2 inch WW's and it makes all the difference. Looks much more period. I also agree dont do red rims, how about spider caps or so, I dont even really like 50's hubcaps on a 60's car, so spiders do well. I went the cheap route and ordered some Radir bullets and they look like a cheap poor mans spider cap. It looks like you had about as many trim holes to weld up as I did.Cool car though, I'm suprised you havent heard the four doors suck thing yet from a select few who like to post that. Keep us posted on the progress.
Sure. Those old slotted wheels are available in your bolt pattern check for 280Z parts on eBay - same bolt pattern and close to same offset. I was going to run a set on the Falcon, polish them and paint the insides red but sold them and did the 5 lug conversion.
I agree w/ keeping it 60`s. Just got the wife a 61 comet s22...am thinking two-tone shiny black and red flake w/ chrome smoothies on skinny whites
Looks good so far. I'm impressd with a 4" lower. How'd you do it. I've got 3" blocks and spring compressors waiting to go on my 63 Falcon. I've been busting on my straight six and saving most the body work for later, although I've tackled a bit of that too. The engine is just about done, upgrade electrical, brakes, cooling, etc. One thing about all the critics. Do it how you like. Pull from this and pull from that. Invent a little here and steal from over there. This is custom and that's how you create it.
Nate.......it's lookin' GREAT so far! You have to go with what YOU like, but you are getting some good feedback. I like the sound of the gloss white/red flake roof. That would set off your interior. Might I suggest an idea for inexpensive wheels? How about painting the rims the same white as the car with fogged out red flake centers and chrome lug nuts........or red rims with white fogged centers & chrome lugs. Cheap and a clean 60's look. (I've always liked that look...)
