Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kustombuilder, Jul 8, 2008.

  1. up here if you hit cattle its your fault no matter the situation. you'd owe him the cost of the 2 beefs and be out the wagon unless your ins covers

Something to remember is that tall, heavy animals like cows can be VERY dangerous to hit because a car can just take their legs out from under them and toss them up on the hood right into the driver.

  4. This is sooo bizarrre. Last night I almost hit two pigs that were walking down the middle of the road about 1/4 mile from my house. I don't think my coupe would have faired as well as you 63 did.

years ago my buddy i worked with was coming to work one day and a cow T boned him. the owner of the cow was rounding his cows up to send to slaughter and this one cow made a break for it. he ran through a fence down a hill and into my buddies Isuzu Pup. totaled the truck but the cow was nowhere to be found, he guesses it kept running because it was so scared.

Dad bought a truckload of "baldy blacks" (Angus bull, Herford heifer -- black body with white face:rolleyes:) and put them in the corral on my granddad's place to settle down before turning them loose on the wheat.

Some dogs got into the corral that night (dogs attack the nose of cattle, wolves and coyotes go for the hamstring) and they broke out (through 4 oak 1"x6" boards:eek:) and scattered.

It was a moonless night and one got on US 60 (divided 4-lane) that had just been repaved -- didn't even have the stripes on it yet.

Highway Patrol Sergant in a new "supervisors car" was headed to see what was going on when he spotted something ahead. Flicked his headlights on high and the calf swapped ends and charged.

Calf was totaled:rolleyes: and car was imobilized (radiator damage) but radio worked fine. Blue lights started heading his way from all over the Texas Panhandle.

6 got up on Santa Fe track and were hit. Since SF doesn't want to have to maintain fence along the tracks they will pay for livestock they hit (if, if and more if's:mad:) but since they found evidence of the dog attack they were liable (and dad didn't have to buy the state a new cruiser:D).

But the lawyers did mess around from January until July before they got serious about settling.

Their last try to dodge paying for the calves was in late June when they wanted him to dig up the dead calves so they could count them.

And when they settled they didn't notice that although they had been pretty scrawny calves when they got hit they'd kept gaining weight just like the rest -- maybe even a little better:rolleyes::cool:.

At least that's the way it goes in Texas:D

I think I saw a '63 the other day -- I'll go back and check tomorrow.

A neighbor hit a cow with his 63 impala wagon a few years ago. He was almost stopped, so it rolled up on the hood and took out the windshield, and bent the windshield frame at the top. Not as bad damage as yours, but it's odd... makes you wonder what cows have against impala wagons...

Interesting thread brings about more random thoughts. Who is liable? Who hit who?

Did the cow run into the impala or did the impala run into the cow? If the owner of the cow is liable, then if you hit a kid standing in the road, would the parent be liable?

I agree it doesn't seem right but do not be so sure that the owner of the cattle is liable.

The owner should have insurance to cover the damages if he is liable.
I would check out the law before I make too big of a thing out of it with his insurance company because, like SKO said, you could be the proud new owner of two dead cows. Really a bitch if you don't eat beef. :)

  11. years ago a neighbor hit a bull with a 70 GTO. yours looks good in comparison. sorry about your ride, good luck finding the parts.

  12. Would this be a bad time to ask about some T-Bone and New York cuts ?

  13. Ouch. Saw an F-250 that hit a cow in Sierra Vista, AZ about 10 years ago. I was in getting a little wife :vs: mailbox damage taken care of (one of many trips), and had to ask about the brand new F-250 Crew-Cab 4x4 that was laying totaled in a puddle of its own juices out in front of the body shop. Evidently, the black bull wandered out on a stretch of the (unlit) highway at midnight on a moonless night. There, he met his match in a Ford p'up going 55mph. The poor cowboy driving the truck was in the local hospital (no seat belt) and his shiny new ride was being used as an organ donor. I swear, he could not have messed that truck up more if he had hit a concrete bridge abutment at that speed, and was very lucky he wasn't killed. While it sucks that you will be practicing the dark art of metallurgy in your garage, you did walk away from this one fairly intact. Good luck getting the wagon back together!

They live across the "street" from you??? You need to move to a town where they don't allow cattle to be raised. Cattle should be raised on a farm in the country where what you drive on is called a road. Looks like your neighbor will put some shiny new paint on your car for you!

By the way, he is liable for the damage to your car. You don't use your insurance to fix it, your rates will go up. If he pays a deductible it had better be for his own insurance.

Michigan being a no fault state and all the cars insurance will pay for his cows and his homeowners insurance will pay for the car... or something like that. i don't know. but the damages have come in at somewhere near half the agreed value of the car. once you hit 75% they total the car. it could be bought back for about $1700 at that point. probably just better off fixin it than totaling it. it's a solid car and WAY too savable to scrap it.
