I have a 63 Comet with the 2spd Merc-o-Matic that was having some trouble with sliding between D and N so I figured I'd replace the shifter detent on the column. Well now the damn thing won't go back on right. Was hoping there's a trick I'm just missing to getting things lined up just right.

Don’t know of any trick, I’ve replaced a lot over the years..... it’s just a matter of getting the right parts in right. Sorry I’m no help for you. Maybe pics might help. Always does.

Yeah, I feel like it should be just a case of pull it off and put it back but something's not sitting right with the shifter I think. Going to have to pull it all out again I be think.

Well is been , years past , but I have attacked a few of these in my past . Just remembering what to do is the issue . “ I think my battery is goin Flat , Mate ! “ best as can recall there is a spring at the bottom of column that pushes up on the shift tube . The collar has a slot that must be aligned and push downward on the spring to reinstall the works back together .

That must be what's not sitting correctly. It looks like the shifter ***embly just isn't meeting the shift detent right at all.

Ok , just remember the sector (long shaft ) is not removable from the box as might thing . It goes all the way to the steering wheel from the box , the column is also known as the mast . If you look where the column is bolted to the dash there are two bolts and a clamp , the column will slide up and down to change the clearance between the shift collar and the wheel if you loosen these bolts . Retighten the bolts when you are finished and you should be good to go .

Thanks! Hasn't even thought to adjust the column to get some additional clearance.

One question, should the collar with the shifter stay in place when is all lined up, or should I have to keep putting pressure on it? Seems like it should lock into place but it isn't.
