So here's the story. I was driving my 63 Continental a month or so back and all of a sudden it stopped shifting into third gear on the way home from a party. I got it home... let it sit, and then the next time I went to drive it, it worked. It did this a few times... working intermitently. As this progressed it started running ****ty... misfiring and bogging down.... but it would do the same as the ******, work fine then get ****ty and then run its way out of it. I changed some vac*** lines, checked the modulator, rebuilt the carb, put in a new fuel pump and filter, new points, cap, rotor... all that. I noticed while troubleshooting that it will get to about 45 (in second gear) and start to lurch back and forth as if the fuel pump was going.... So my overall questions are... do I have several problems here.... could the transmission be causing my motor running ****ty somehow.... would the transmisson cause the motor to lurch the way it has been? Thanks in advance. Johnny.
I'd sort out the motor first, if it still shifts funny when it's running right then I'd worry about the ******. It's more likely that the engine is running bad and making the ****** feel strange. If the engine loses power, you'll need to give it a lot of throttle to keep going at higher speeds, so it won't have any vacuum, and won't shift into high gear.
You should put that thing in the WAY back of your garage and keep working on your hot rod. You need to race my camaro...
