Technical 63 Riviera-what do you use for wheels?

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Groucho, Jul 3, 2014.

  1. I bought these 4 yrs ago thinking I'd run em on my next 60 Pontiac. So, I was gonna put em on my Rivi instead. The wheels won't fit over the hubs (frnt) or axle flange (rear). Which may tell me they'd never fit the 60 Pontiac or maybe anything else with 5 on 5 bolt pattern

I used Astros with 1/4" spacers behind them

I think it looks good along with the 3" drop.

  3. OK, that makes sense (the spacers) since my chrome whls have the same 3 1/8" hole as Supremes.......and I see Supremes on LOTS of Rivis. THX

Not sure why the Buicks have a larger hub diam than others. I had Supremes on my old 64 and i don;t recall having to use spacers? Or maybe my brain is spaced out......

not that i want to see a bunch of them since i'm running them on my unobody but cragar eliminators wrapped in skinny whites look good on alot of stuff and they aren't everywhere like like supremes are now. i have always been a huge supremes guy but am waiting for them to die again before i'll put another set on anything. some will say they aren't a traditional wheel but there were several that looked like them back in the day. Indy had 2 styles that looked close and actually the rare cragar gt plus looked similar.....ken...

Buick Rivera needs wire wheels either tru spokes of real buicks, pinner whites & mild altitude adjustment = perfect!

Buick hubs are about the biggest there is. If you can find the right guy with a big lathe, have him cut the centers to fit your hubs. Spacers plus longer studs equals $$$'s and then you lose the hubcentric thing...

Indeed - Buick on a Buick - poetic. Mind you they look good on pretty much anything . I have a bunch of originals in my stash if anyone is looking for some....

skylarks are the ruler but few people are will to put out money for skylarks. and yes the above lark'd rivi needs skinny whites. wide whites were out of date by the time the rivi came along. tru's or 36 spoke cragar wires like my buddy mike had on his rivi would fill the bill to.

the chrome reverse look good but leave me wanting more. same reason i decided against running them on my unibody.

thats a nice og car. as said right set of wheels, 2-3" drop. DONE....ken....

  16. I had those wheels on the shelf for something like 4 yrs. I figure if they don't get used now it's just dead money up there. I'll get bullet caps/lugs at the next swap and lower it 2" next week

So you made a set of spacers, fitted a new set of tires on your chrome rims and fitted them on the car in the last 5 hours?

Wire wheels on a post-war car is like putting chocolate syrup on a burrito.

No but you sure didn't waste any time once your mind was made up. And I like your Rivi and all the other ones posted on here. We never got them here but there's lots of them making the boat trip now.

Skylarks on a Riv or Nomad is so sixties it hurts. The Borranis, not sixties, but its killer as all get out, traditional or not. And those gold stripes, HELL YEA. And no, I'm not kissing up to Ryan, I dont kiss up to anyone. It just plain ROCKS.

please tell me you're kidding......... between Tru's, Cragars, Skylarks, etc between the 60s and 70s there were probably more "wires" on cars than pre-war. deff so if you run it well into the 80s/90s lowlow scene that was still flowing them hard.

fatter/low count spokes like 36's look right on a rivi. i strongly considered trading my wildcat for a friends rivi 10+ years ago despite the fact i knew it was full of bondo. he liked my car, i liked his we both had ben driving each fr a few years and were due for a change. i don't thnk i wouldhave considered it if his car didn't loo so good on the wires...

No, not at all. I'm not really a fan of any wire wheels but can semi tolerate them on the early stuff. Wires on a post-war car just seems like something Huggy Bear would drive to me. I doubt Groucho would look good in a purple velour suit and leopard print hat.
