Ray Uhl ran a Thunderbolt in 1965 before running this factory 1965 AFX Comet formerly owned by Don Nicholson. Does anyone know if Ray is still with us? He had a stroke quite a few years ago, but was a nice person to talk with. He told me an interesting story about the car after he bought it.

    Regards,
    Dennis

What a great side profile shot of Ed's Marauders Inc. car The rear alteration is what I based the Rocket off of, but this is the "first" real good side profile shot I've seen of this car!! Looks like I may have missed the mark of the rear wheel being centered on the roof pillar. Better push my wheels further ahead!!

Dale;the side views are deceiving,if you draw a line down from the pillar to the wheel center they don't seem that different, but when you look at the distance from the door to the wheel opening and the leading edge of the tire up to the window it shows. If you move your rear wheels forward a couple more inches the Rocket will look more altered.Do you have room at the rear bulkhead? ROY.

Dennis;is the Ray Uhl Comet the one that Eddie Schartman drove for Don Nicholson? Just curious because the silver in the cove looks similar. ROY.

64Cyclone;that is why I asked, would like to hear the story!!!!There sure seems to be a lot of Dyno's Comets floating around,he must have had a dozen 64/65 Comets!!!!!I think clones or tribute cars are great but the builders/owners should state the facts as to its originality! ROY.

    Dogpatch,
Your Comet seems to wander a little goin' down the track? Is it hard to keep it in the groove? Just curious.

it pretty much drives itself with the radial tires on it, when i run the bias ply skinnys its alittle more work. the comet gearbox turn to turn is 3 turns so i would like to find a close ratio box for it though. still a blast to drive.

Going through old issues of Drag News. The 1965 McCormack L-M car was mentioned in the 1 May 65 and 6 June 65 issues, including a picture. It already had the rear axle slid and a Moon tank up front.

Therefore, it is highly unlikely it is the Moyer car, or any other known AFX from back then.

    Dennis

The 65 AFX Comets had a 112.50" wheelbase, 3.50" shorter than a stock Comet in 65 only. The 65 BFX Comets were all 114.0 Wheelbase.

yeah at least its staying together long enough to play alittle and hit a few tracks and carshows in the area, still gunna play with the big block over the winter, and see if it was an ultra bell problem or trans issue.

    Dale Update

Dale finally is at the rehahab center and is doing well. He is fighting some kind of Staff infection he got from the hospital. Makes you not want to go to the hospital. But He is in good spirits on his way back to a long but full recovery.
No news on the T-Bolt. I did however went up to Julesburg to race on Sunday for the last race of the season and to celebrate their 60th B-Day. At first I wasnt going to go because what happened but I had to go and see for myself.I did get to see Dales car and got to take some pics. I was asked not to post anything until its all the inspection is done. The car is definitely totaled, maybe a taillight can be saved. Thy had to cut the roof back and cut open the roll bar to get Dale out. I have to say it was a full cert Cage and it did its job, the entire roll bar was in good shape.
Havent raced since July so out of practice. Had a good day though, Car Ran great, Quickest I've gone there, Still getting beat up by the Red Light Bandit.
Heres some pics and some late night Comet Tv ( Dad Running the Camara, going to have to find a new Video guy I had to edit out 15 min of the ground , the sky, )

Ken;the Comet looks great,I like the on board video!! C-YA at the CHRR,Dale Snoke and I are running EX,trying to stay clear of DF.I'm fairly sure Todd will be there so you should have at least one other Comet in A/FX.I'm headed up Thursday to get pitted and through tech.It looks like a few old Ford drivers will be there, should be great! ROY

  27. Ken, the video your dad shot reminds me of the old 8mm home movies from 1964. Throw some scratches in there and it would look like something from Bee-on-Video.... Jim Amos would be proud......

Glad to hear the car is running good.

Here is a picture of the 65 Comet that won the gasser class at Milan Dragway last weekend, AJ was running the 12.0 index and stayed with in a tenth of it.

You must have good eyes to read those center caps on those low resolution pictures. LOL For $5,335 anyone could order an AFX from L-M.

From going through Drag News, both the Moyer and McCormack came on the scene around the first week of May 1965. The Moyer car was a factory build, so no reason why the McCormack car wasn't.

By early June 1965 the McCormack car had the rear axle slid forward and a Moon tank installed. I take it no one knows who Lagana sold the car to or where its current whereabouts is? Did the car get repaired after the roll over accident as shown in the previous pictures posted?

    Regards,
    Dennis
