Little setbacks here and there, but we all know how that goes, The new comp chromoly rockers are very close to the old style Ansen valve covers, and we're not sure if the breathers will flow enough. So, I've got a back up set of cheapo aluminum valve covers and push-ins to handle the engine break-in duties.

Roy- I got the new one wire GM alt. You know of anyone that has a quick sketch of where they spliced in, while removing the old generator style voltage reg? I also "discovered" Mercury's long reisitor wire under the dash! I got some wire cleaning and deleting to do. Don't want any burndowns happening!

Well, the video camera is charged, ready to document start-up. Got a guy that wants to make a small documentary on what it takes to "throw" one of our cars together. Maybe it'll help make the world realize our cars are really "works of art"!

  9. Roy, glad to hear your finally got your motor back.

Teddisnoke, pics and video of your comet would be great.

I changed distributors the other day and changing carbs tonight. I borrowed a carb a couple weeks back , it improved my ET by .4 .

Roger;what distributor did you end up using?I run a Holley,750HP on my 347,ran a Holley 700DP on my 289. How far from Mission Raceway are you? ROY.

  12. Hi Roy, I was running a modified Dura spark with a MSD and now have put in a stock Dura spark. This winter I plan on buying a MSD distributor and new MSD box with a rev limiter and 2 step. I have been running a Demon 750 the last 3 years but borrowed a Quick Fuel 750. I will probaly buy a new carb as well. I got a good deal on the Demon as it would not run out of the box. I live on Vancouver Island , 1 hour to the ferry, 2 hours for the ferry, and then another hour to Mission.

I know this is off topic but, dose anybody know what happened to Crites? I can't get on their web site anymore. Are they still in buisness? Where can you get the 64-65 Comet A/FX hoods at?

Guys, I'm really cornfused with something on my Comet. It may prove a costly error on my part.

We ordered a Griffen custom radiator, built to Early Comet specs. It came to me with the upper inlet on the passenger side, and the lower inlet on the drivers side. I dropped off the new Edelbrock water pump, and it appears that it needs a hose coming off the lower passenger side!! Exactly the opposite of the $$$ Griffen unit. What gives??? Whats correct for the year?? And where did Griffen go wrong. Or was it me ? I spec'd out the year car (64) I'm totally confused, and being green with Mercury's, and not sure where I went wrong?? Is there a water pump that'll remedy the issue? In my case the Eddy pump is cheaper than the radiator...

Thanks for helping to set me straight.....

NO Roy I don't... It reminded me of one I seen in the early 90's at a Ford race, only seen it one time (like a BIGFOOT sighting)....

Dale;it is their screw up! 64-65 289 water in-out were both on pass side. The later 289-302s had lower on driver side and the timing pointer on the pass side.My friend Eric had that problem and solved it with a rubber 90 on the radiator connected to a pipe then a rubber connector hose to the pump. You could change to a later front cover and water pump, front covers are interchangeable between 289-302-351,you need them to match the water pump mounting.Another issue with a late cover and mount will be the old style alternator mount will not fit and the timing marks on the damper are different!Give me a call if I have confused you!! Aren't Fords FUN?!!!! ROY.

I'm going to try Eric remedy, and make it work. We almost got it fired this afternoon, but will be back in the morning to see if it'll growl to life:

    Thanks, Roy!

The run-in went off without a hitch!! To most, just another start-up! To me, a combination of parts that makes for quite a wicked sounding little small block. Now, a few start-and-runs, then swap out the single springs for the wazoo units, and then off next Saturday for some dyno fun!!! Oops! Forgot. Its a 650 double pumper, that Bill had. We sent it out the Carb Shop for a bit of work. It fired right off, I think I counted three or four revolutions and it caught immediately.

Is it possible the Griffen radiator was for an inline 6? and that was where their confusion was? Just a thought.

I don't think so. It has a three inch core, come to find out its the same overall dimensions as Steve Magnante's Wilshire Shaker altered big block Nova. I've cruised with him on 100-plus degree days when he lived here in SoCal. And that car is a 502 . The little 289 should be in good hands, but I may have install an electric fan due to space limitations.
