Mike,I've wondered about that too.I've seen several different combinations. Both red and white on black cars too.Nothing in my dealer literature really says what was available/optional.I think depending on the interior color you ordered at the time, could have played a part in what you ended up with.
I just found a great little options/accessory's booklet for '65Comets at a swapmeet.First one I've ever come across.I don't know if one exsisted for '64?

I'm sure someone one here could have more knowledge/input.Roy is a good candidate for that!

    HappyThanksgiving all,Myron

    Mike,one thing I found in the '64brochure
It's states 13 solid colors and 19 two tone combinations available at extra cost.
So,it sounds like all kinds of possibilities for the comet buyer back then.Groovy stuff!:D

ClearSpot, thanks for posting. It is good stuff. I am guessing that the tu-tone listed in the '64 brochure mainly concerns itself with roof color and main body color. Is it safe to say that the tu-tone combinations would also carry over to the painted 1/4 insert? Just curious.

Mike,It's possible.Plus, the interior color that was chosen probably had something to do with those exterior combinations. They tried to play colors off each other, back through the 50's&60's.
All I can say was there were overwhelming choices!

    DESCRIPTION
A significant event occurred in factory sponsored drag racing for the 1964 season when Chevrolet announced that they would no longer provide factory support for drag racing. In an effort to capitalize on this news, Lincoln Mercury entered into drag racing with a special race prepared 1964 Comet. The first order of business was for their newly established race division director Fran Hernandez to hire top Chevrolet Super Stock drivers Don Nicholson and Ronnie Sox to drive the Mercury Comets in the A/FX class during the upcoming season.

The decision was made to run the Comets in the A/FX class so they would not compete directly with the S/S Ford Thunderbolts. Due to success of the Thunderbolts Mercury would use the same pattern to build the new Comets at Dearborn Steel Tubing. The modifications included widening the shock towers and the upper control arm mounting points to accommodate the 427 High Riser engines. It was equipped with a four speed transmission and a heavy duty 9 inch rear end in order to handle the powerful 427 engine. To lighten up the Comet, the fenders, hood, doors and front bumper were all made of Fiberglass. The interior was stripped of the heater and radio and equipped with light weight buckets seats as seen in the Thunderbolts.Twenty A/FX Comets were built by Dearborn Steel Tubing plus one unique Comet station wagon. The special wagon was picked up by Don Nicholson at the same time as VIN 4H23 551850 from the Detroit Steel Tubing Lincoln Mercury garage. (Jess Woodman purchased the vehicle through Laughlin Miles Lincoln Mercury of Alton, Illinois whereas Nicholson was supplied his for a nominal sum by Lincoln Mercury.) The station wagon was to test the idea if it were possible for a longer overhanging rear end to supplement the recent vehicle’s the traction. The station wagon was also equipped with the 427 –ci High Riser engine, rated at 425 hp at 6,000 rpm and 480 ft pounds of torque at 2,700 rpm. The station wagon weighed 3,340 pounds compared with the coupes weighing in at 3,085 pounds.

    - Special VIN unique to these A/FX Racecar which is absent of engine ID code
    - Original data tag with company DSO and manufacturing date of 12/31/63
    - 427 Hi Riser engine
    - Aluminum 4-speed transmission
    - Detroit Steel Tubing Thunderbolt style rear axle control arms/widened shock towers
    - Fiberglass lightweight front fenders and distinctive teardrop style hood
    - Special lightweight front bucket seats
    - Radio and Heater delete
    - Extensive documentation from Lincoln Mercury Racing Division about the Comet Race Program

Well you had this one locked on. Jess Woodman in the Laughlin Miles Mercury A/FX Comet.

Looks like my list has 21 Calientes, so one of them should be a second owner. Great stuff. Love the 64's Wish I had the cash to buy this one.

Thanks for all the complements. Not sure I would do it again, Car shows in the winter are a pain in the !!!. You should see Eddies Falcon, he ran right into a blizzard on the way home, a week of cleaning gone. Now he has two weeks of cleaning ahead of him. With as much salt that got thrown on his car he can call himself the Salt Shaker.

    Roy
How did the Pinks show go for you at Phoenix? Is there going to be a Comet on TV?

All I know I'm ready to go some where warm and do a little bit of this

Dont let these comet guys know but I just pulled the T-Bolt project back in the garage. Looks like there is going to be some THUNDER time going on in the shop this winter.

    Thanks

The lightweight belongs to a gentleman out of Calif. One of my Buddies is a Galaxie restorer here in Denver. Hes done 4 or 5 R code 63's already,This lightweight and a bunch of Starliners. In fact in the latest Hot Rod there is an article on George Poteets Collection,In there you will see a purple Iris 2 dr 61 wagon that he did. This guy out of Calf. supposeably is building some sort of museum in Arizona.Along with this lightweight my buddy is storing the 824 Brannan lightweight 63 and the 63 Norristown lightweight are here. I'll get pics next week, I might get to test drive the Norristown LWG.

I've never seen Jacks lightweight up close, just in that Magazine article a few years back.He was going to bring the AWB Injected Cammer T-Bolt to this show,we had a spot for him and everything but the snow storm in the mountains kept him in Salt Lake City. That was the only thing missing a couple of fairlanes to put in there.

Ken;you guys had a great group of cars in that display, mild to wild!!! I won't be on TV unless they show some qualifying shots. They picked a low 10 second group of 32 cars,I was in the upper 10 second group. It was an "experience",don't think I will do any more, way to much hype and what a circus! I think the whole West coast got hammered that week of your show, cold and snow every where!!! ROY.
