Quick question...can you use different starter on a '64 Galaxie then the Bendix one that comes with it? My friend has been through 3 already on the new motor he bought, and it seems to only want to turn over when it feels like it. It's a new 390, not more then 100 miles on it, and when it gets warm it doesn't want to turn. Sometimes it does... then doesn't. Not too good to be a 50 percent chance you'll make it home. I know they changed the starter in '65... can you use one of those? I belive those are electric.. it's a 3 speed automatic...

  2. The 65 should work they show two different numbers between the years but I cant imagine them being all that different, one might be a little different design than the other but should mount up ..go to the parts store with the 64 unit and have them pull one for a 65 and compare them,or go through the book and look at all the Ford units, for the most part Ford starters are all the same kinda like the GMs...

Make sure he has a good ground and cables, check the wireing!!! Them starters usually last a long time, have at least 107K on mine now, maybe twice that? Can't remember the last time it was changed..........OLDBEET

  4. Yep, it sounds like the motor isn't grounded good or a solenoid about to go.
