Here's a pic of my newly aquired '64 Olds 98. I know it screams for Astro's, bags, and bellflower tips, but right now it runs and drives with spinner hubcaps, skirts, and whitewalls, so I'm going to leave it alone until I finish up a couple of my other projects. Then, hopefully, I'll do all that ****, plus some paint touch-up I have a question, I want to have the transmission power-flushed, it has that goofy trans (I think people call them Slim-Jims) with the PNDSLR pattern and I believe it calls for Type A transmission fluid. Is there a good equivalent to that? Can I use that Dex-mo-tron **** they sell at the parts store, or do I need to order Type A? Also, I seem to remember a few weeks back someone was on here and had a car similar to this one, with some black trailer wheels on it, is that guy still around? Would like to know if he did anything with that, and if so, I'd like to see how it turned out.
neat car dude is it lug 5X5 or smaller 4 3/4 also have fun fitting a tire under rear as nether my 62 or 65 Starchiefs can fit a rim wider then X6 with standred spacing & i have one of them goofy trans also with R as last gear
i would probably avoid the power flush on that old ******, just drop the pan and clean the strainer,or replace the filter. is it in need of a fluid change? just wondering. a buddy of mine did the same thing on his 57 caddy(power flush),and the ****** never acted right afterwards. the fluid was not bright red in it,but it did not smeel toasted either. let some trans. experts chime in.
Those slim jim hydros are good ******s. I don't think that you need any special type of fluid for them. If the fluid in it looks good leave it alone. If it ain't broke - don't try to fix it!
Type A is the predecessor of modern Dextron III. My leaky *** dynaflow had some A in it, definately gone now. I just put the D3 in and keep drivin it.
I am pretty sure that Dexron is the replacement for the old Type A fluid. New Dexron is called Mercon as well, it is interchangeable.
The trans doesn't seem to shift right to me, kinda sloppy, although the fluid doesn't look bad. Maybe the trans is just gone to ****? I've usually had good luck with flushing out ******s that aren't shifting as good as they used to, I don't want to have to rebuild it, I bought the car for $850 and I'd hate to double the money I have in it by rebuilding the trans. So maybe I'll just change the filter and put some Lucas in it. Anyone have any suggestions?
I do transmission flushes at work, I would change the filter before I get a flush though, who knows how old it is. Most machines simply switch over the fluid, the transmission pump does all the work, the advantage is that almost all the fluid is removed, torque converter and all. I say it's worth a shot, less than a hundred bucks. Dexron III would be fine, you might want to avoid the synthetic to avoid any potential leakage.
